A mother in Houston, Texas was horrified to learn hackers had compromised her home's security camera system and put up a live feed of her two daughters' bedroom online.
...
Upon learning of the hack, Jennifer hired a security consulting company to figure out what happened. It turns out one of her daughters accidentally opened the door to a group of hackers when she decided to play Minecraft on an unprotected server. It was child's play for the attackers to identify the IP address of the daughter's iPad. From there, they made their way to the modem and DVR system, which is connected to the home's security cameras.

I am curious, how many of you have security systems setup like this person did?

I don't need a security system. If I'm away, there's nothing I can do about intruders. If I'm home, the intruder's earned everything he can get.

Generally, I don't like tech in my core infrastructure. I kind of resent my digital thermostat, and wish the mercury switch was still there :^D

While looking at satellite images of Earth with her son, Ivie decided to download Live Camera Feed, a free app that allows users to view the footage of more than 50,000 CCTV and surveillance and security cameras in real time. It was then that Ivie came across the feed of the daughters' bedroom.

So she just happened to install the app and just happened to stumble across her daughters bedroom in a 1:50,000 chance? Nope, not buying it. There's something else to this story.

No, someone saw it, reposted it on FB where it got shared, and then the actual mother found out about it via FB.

yeah, no. No cams in a bedroom or a bathroom. ( I don't have any cams myself). That's just wrong, big brother at home.

So the old "admin" "password" wasn't changed and this is somehow a shocking result?

"Hackers" big air quotes there. They weren't compromised, they left themselves open. Unfortunately the article doesn't make this distinction clear.

The next lines from that article:
Jennifer can't believe security cameras actually put her daughters in danger:

"We have security cameras to protect them. I feel like I've failed."

It wasn't your security cameras. And, yes, you did fail.

This is old news... There's a website where you can search non-protected/unencrypted web cameras.

It's common to have cams in the bedroom. I put a baby cam in my kid's bedroom so I can monitor the kid's mid-day nap without having to enter the room. The cam will come out when the kid is older. IOW I wouldn't have a cam in there when the kid is old enough to independently access and play on Minecraft servers.

Mine is an IP cam but I've intentionally turned off WiFi and have not allowed remote access to the cam. Still, security holes can exist and I'm not surprised a non-tech-savvy mom's network got compromised.

You can get non-networked baby cams but they have other issues, including being able to be intercepted by neighbour's if they have similar devices. Furthermore, either they suck or else they're horrendously expensive. The IP security cams are a much better bang for the buck for this usage and also have the benefit of working with your tablets and phones or other computing devices from anywhere on your home network.

Am I paranoid? Let's see... how often do I use the built in camera on my mac book pro? Never? Yep. Never. So, that piece of tape that matches in color is covering it - you wouldn't even notice the tape if you weren't looking for it. You'd think that after that case with the school spying on its students that people would actually give a second thought about cameras positioned in their houses. But, nope.

Should have changed the default password.

Also, is it possible to play Minecraft through a proxy or VPN?
