Live boots

Well, I'm looking for a live boot, in particular, BartPE. Unfortunately, I do not have a windows CD handy to create one, so, what are some other live boots that are comparable to BartPE.

I'm looking for something to salvage files off of a broken HD if that makes any difference.

I downloaded 'Hiren's BootCD v8.8' after another member here mentioned it a while back but I've never tried it. My favorite LiveCD is the Ubuntu install CDROM.
 
yeah, I have Hiren's bootcd and ultimate boot cd. . .right now I'm running spinrite on a machine and it's not looking too hot. So, I'll probably need a live boot that can function as an OS that could mount an external hard drive to back the data up. But I'll look into the Ubuntu. Or is it Ubuntu Live?

The Ubuntu CD is live. Once you boot into the OS, you can click an icon on your desktop to install it to your hard drive.
 
Knoppix is another good one. It's the 'original' live CD. They are the ones that realy made it popular.

There are a number of good sys admin oriented disks that are designed specificly for recovering files and such things.

Trinity is the only one I looked at and it was a while ago. It has 4 virus scanners. Other features include the ability to reset administrator passwords in Windows, access ntfs partitions, image drives, resize partitions, and pretty much anything a normal Linux install can do.

Boot it up, start the ssh server. Use Putty.exe to remote into it from your windows desktop while reading online documentation and such things. Whatever you want.

There are a few of these things. Other things include hacking-oriented cdroms for network penitration testing and such things.
