if anyone wants to add me my gamertag is purbeast. if you send me a FR just put something in the message so KNow you are from anandtech, like AT or something just so i don't think it's a random request. i love how you have the top scores right in your face from your friend list 🙂

hah wow i just realized something so lame ...

on live.xbox.com you cannot send messages unless you are a gold member. my gold expired a few months ago. i'm going to renew but i never realized this was a "perk" of gold. LAME!

Also since your multiplier is due to geoms now, it's not a bad idea to rush at the guys you are killing to sweep up the geoms they drop instead of the usual circling around and shooting backwards. Once the board becomes chaos, though, circling still works best.

Do you guys threw an entire 3 minutes without dying? I'm not that good yet, to much shit takes me down 🙁

No, I died a few times - just need to keep it to a minimum. I think I didn't die until my score was already 1 million, though. Then it just gets crazy. But if you get on a roll, the multiplier kicks in and your score blows up.

longest i've ever made it w/out dying in deadline was to 1:17 and holy crap, at that point, you can hardly tell wtf is going on. it's a huge clusterfuck.

The game has a 3D camera view. Unfortunately it's only available when you pause the game, but it's still cool to see your one little ship getting swarmed by hundreds of baddies. 😀

Joystiq

I suck horribly at this game. I only have high scores on my FL for Waves (2.8 million) and Sequence (27 million). I'm not sure how my friend managed to get 88 freaking million in Pacificism--I can't break 8 million consistently. 🙁

I got 32 million on pacificism, thought I had done well. Then I added purbeast to my friends list. Fucking 130mil or some shit. I'll never get that high!

144mil actually 😛

and once you get the hang of it you will get better trust me. my first day i got like 40mil, then i got 126mil, then i got 144mil and haven't gotten there since. i've broken 100mil quite a few times, but usually if i have a "good" run where i don't screw up early on, i'll get over 50mil pretty eaisly.

one big key to pacifism that i've noticed is to not let a buncha gates get gathered up in a corner. sometimes if you have to clear gates w/no diamonds around, do it so that you won't be screwed when going through them later and running into the yellow ends.

Ya pur, I ran into that same realization. I kept running into the knobs on the gates, so I started just jumping through them as fast as possible, the little geometry bastards will die eventually, regardless.

On the other modes, the blackholes that suck everything in, are they get to blow up, or is it better to let them suck shit in?

i believe but I am not 100% on this, but I read it on gamefaqs from some guys who are better than me at the game, they said that guys you kill via the blackhole or gates give you you 5x the normal points they would. however when the black holes blow up, i believe those guys that come out aren't worth as much added together as it would have been if you blow the black hole up.

Blowing up the blackholes would ruin that awesomely loud incredible sound they make when you're cranking it and zoned in.
🙂

Purbeast, I am torn as to whether or not I am happy I added you to my friends list. On one hand, I like a good challenge and your scores are insane. On the other hand - in particular, my right hand - my thumb grows numb from relentlessly trying to beat the some 18 million in deadline.

I've reached a point now where I've set milestones for myself - a set score I need to be at for a given time to even have a remote chance of beating it. Ridiculous.

sorry 🙁

😛

that deadline run i had, i actually died like 50 seconds into it, but then survived until like 12 seconds were left. it was so freaking crazy by that point it was insane.

I'm finding that this game rewards insanity. I enjoy circling around the board, avoiding enemies and killing everything following me. But to get your multiplier up, you really need to go towards your enemies, and not kill them behind you. Also taking suicidal runs straight down the middle is a good way for a big multiplier boost.

I've gotten up to the 1 minute mark without dying and still not close to your high score (or even my 14 million one), simply because I was too conservative and my multiplier was too low.

I also ultimately finish with 1 or 2, sometimes 3 bombs left - I need to work on using them better.

No, but it's a good way to keep you from dying. Also, you can collect the geoms from all the things killed by the bomb, so it's a nice multiplier boost as well.

LOL! I'm starting to play more now and everytime I die I'm normally hitting the bomb button.

It's like subconsciously I can see there is an enemy going to get me and I'm just a tenth of a second too late.

How the heck do you guys get those crazy scores? I downloaded the demo version last night after reading this thread just to give the game a try, and I'm definitely missing something. I only played it a little while, but there were 2 people on my friends list who had scores around 7-8 million. After playing for a little while, my best score was only a bit over 600k. I didn't expect a top score my first time playing but 600k (on my BEST run) vs millions of points? I don't normally suck quite that bad, I usually only suck a little. haha. So what am I missing that generates big points? I don't know what my max multiplier was .. probably a few hundred.... there must be a trick to working that up to get those big points.

crap i need to get back on this game! i turned on GW2 yesterday and ducci has me in 3 scores! i can't be having that!!!

hopefully tonight i get some time to try, you have set some tough scores in king and deadline.

jdport there really isn't much to say about it other than just practice heh. oh, and don't die!

I guess you mean in the deadline mode - as it's the only one in the demo.

First, don't get disheartened by your low score. Scores in this game actually grow exponentially - mainly because your multiplier is constantly growing. So the difference between 600K and 7-8 million isn't as big as you might think.

Second, the best advice is don't die. I know that seems simple, but the less you die, the more enemies build up, and the faster your multiplier will increase. Use bombs if you need to. Actually, this leads to the biggest boost in your score - the black holes.

The longer you stay alive, you'll reach a point where there is a massive amount of guys following you or surrounding you. If a black hole pops up, get to it as soon as possible and kill it - it will cause an explosion killing everything within its radius. And not only that - you actually get bonus points for those kills on top of that. I've destroyed a black hole that gave me 1 million points.

And as far as basic mechanics go, the tried and true method for surviving in the game is constantly going in circles around the rim of the board while shooting in front of you, "plowing" the way. Then, shoot back to kill enemies trailing you when the path ahead is clear.

As soon as I hit #1 I took a break for a bit. You need to get on that to get me back to playing (my deadline score of 22 million will be tough, I think).
