Little RANT about Sony's SDM-S73 flat screen LCDs

I have 4 of these monitors and 3 of them suffer from extreme backlight problems. 1 arrived with a dead pixel but I was luckily able to massage it out in 2 seconds.

One issue is with bright spots bleeding through the top and bottom as well as both sides of the monitor while leaving the middle of the screen OK. You cannot get rid of these no matter what settings you adjust. This problem again occurs with 3 of the LCD's.

The other problem is with the colors. Having 3 of them side by side (while the other one is used by my gf), they all have considerably different colors, brightness and saturation, and the worst part is, when trying to adjust the colors to somehow make them even, you CANNOT ADJUST THE GREENS making the effort pretty damn difficult. Only the red and blue levels can be adjusted while the greens are factory adjusted. (all 4 montors have different green levels too...55, 73, 87, 33...)

The very first one that I have is near perfect though, just a bit on the dark side but that's ok since it's quite accurate in terms of color reproduction and doesn't suffer at all from the backlight bleeding problem the other 3 exhibit. However, it's almost as if they've used different LCD panels on the last 3 I've bought.

I'm trying to get Sony to replace these. So far their service is pretty good although I've yet to get the replacements. They actually answer their phones within a very reasonable time and are very friendly and helpful. They actually speak perfect English and makes me believe that the other person's name is indeed Jim and not Rajagopal.
 
I'm probably just gonna replace these if I can although I bought them from Newegg. What would you suggest? I need great consistant image quality and need to use both VGA and DVI ports on my vid cards.
 
dude just give up a little deskspace and get the 19 or 22" mitsubishi superbright ag crt, better picture than any lcd for less money.. .thats the no-brainer.. lcds are pos'
 
I don't mind spending the money at all and NO!, CRT's will NEVER go back on my desk. I also do sound recording and LCD's made it possible for me to sit in front of my computer and record guitar without having to swing my chair away or turn off the monitor for each take. CRT's are not an option. I might grab a couple of the 172x Samsungs if they're good enough. I bought the Sony's because they were cheap and had good reviews.

The NEC/Mitsu's are the best CRT you can get, and will put any LCD to shame, BUT LCD's have their place. Text is usually better, and they are smaller, and use less power.

Personally, I went with the NEC/Mitsu, and I love it.

Have you considered the Dell Ultrasharps like the 2001FP or the 2005FPW. You can get them for like $550 shipped with the right coupons. Just curious, why did you have to "turn away" or "turn off the CRT" for each take? What is different with a LCD that affects your recording?
 
Sonys' Biggest mistake was getting out of the CRT buisness. They quit doing what they were good at, and now they are left with very litte area in wich they do accel (except for ES & CCD). Grave Mistake Sony for you to have quit the CRT Buisness since you know so darn little about that other inferrior tech- LCD.

LCD's are perfect for you and people who need space like secretaries, CEO's, desk and disc jockies, and authors.

I dont expect for LCD's to ever fully replace CRT's especially where colour and smoothness matter most. CAD/CAM, Graphical Arts, and Games. Those are two of the things I love about CRT. But the one thing I love most is the Swiss Army Knife Resolutions. I can Display almost any resolution on my monitor nativily with out interpolation. I don't know of anyone who does not find Interpolation annoying.


If you have an HDTV you can sit on your sofa and play your guitar or instrument. Who says you must stay confined to an "Office".

Yea but those coupons hardly work sometimes and at the time I desperately needed these LCD's. The thing about the guitars is that the electromagnetic pickups on the guitar would pick up the CRT interference causing a very loud buzzing sound that would wreak any recording. (unless you're going for that sound of course)

With LCD's, I can put my guitar right up to the screen without any audible outside noise.

Simply put, I am 1000% more productive with LCD's.

Sony's mistake wasn't getting out of the CRT business. Their mistake was that they held on and stayed in the CRT business too long while their competitors focused on newer techs early on. They missed the paradigm shift and now they're playing catchup.
 
back on topic, this is a known problem with this Sony model, theres a very large thread dedicated to it at the hard forum. the newer models have this issue corrected, call sony directly and they will take care of you.
 
Looks like hard forum is down. I really hope I can get Sony to admit the known issue so that I can get all 4 replaced. Just out of curiosity, do you know what the exact issue is?
 
its just a backlight structure issue that they corrected from what people said in their posts. they said they got it replaced directly through sony and the problem was completely gone.
