Well, I've searched the Overclock forum up, down, and halfway to Sunday, but I can't find a thread on properly overclocking these guys. Forgive me for my "newbism" with overclocking mobiles, but I just don't have the experience with it. I would assume that you can't overclock them a great deal, especially given the heating difficulties faced in a laptop, but I would guess you could probably get 100MHz out of 'em. Anyone care to help me out with the logistics, the what, where, and how? I greatly appreciate it!

I haven't seen a discussion on overclocking these powerful lil' badboys either, but typically Intel CPUs are strictly fsb overclockers with no multi mods feasible. Here's a bump to see if someone has the skinny on this or wether it's a no go.

Thanks. I've been searching the net myself and found nothing. If I knew more about OC'ing them, I'd just give it a try and let y'all know, but I don't hardly dare, heh.

I take it you are trying to OC your Banias in a barebones Laptop like Asus or FIC? I know for certain it is next to impossible to OC in a Dell, gateway, etc. All you probably can do is up the FSB. Hopefully you have access to Voltage settings...

The way I wish it was barebone... It is, unfortunately, a Dell. Though I've taken the liberty of reformatting it and removing all their junk, it's still Dell parts. I don't really have access to anything on it right now, it's all locked up. I'm still searching the net for a guid to unlocking it, but I've found nothing thus far. Any advice? Thanks for responding!

As with most laptops (except for some extreme hardware mods I've seen done on Macs), my guess is you're SOL for OCing.

Well you need the option in the bios or some sort of software fsb overclocker than can properly identify the mobo clock generator.

I've got PC Wizard 2004 which tells me, well... everything about my computer. Which unfortunately includes that fact that my CPU is running at a wimpy 100MHz FSB... I just wish I had some idea on unlocking the processor. According to PC Wiz I could probably take this thing up to about 1700MHz if I could unlock it. Any suggestions for software to adjust the FSB? Thanks for all the tips!

softfsb if it works on that mobo...give it a shot.

But it won't work all that well...your heat pipes and such will over heat with all the extra heat you will be dumping into them...your pretty much sol without replacing all the stock cooling inside the lappy.

Well, I appreciate the advice. I'll give it a try nonetheless. Anyone got tips for how high I could go if I wanted it on for say an hour or so? This thing seems to stay pretty cool, despite being a Dell, so I got a bit of confidence in it. It's at 100FSB right now with the mem at 133FSB. Thanks again!

Come to think of it, someone posted info about overclocking Dells successfully sometime back, perhaps searching the archives would turn it up. I know in my experience with attempting to overclock Dells I'd always get a False or unsupported PLL message.

Hmmm... found some threads on Dells, but none pertaining to a laptop, and especially not to my laptop, heh. I don't know, I'm thinkin' it's probably not possible, too bad too. Good news is, I found this "ATI Tools" program which told me I can safely OC my Vid Card much higher than I had it, "Yay!" for ATI Tools! Heh... Anywho... if anyone finds anything out, feel free to let me know, but I'm guessing it's on this side of impossible. Thanks though!

Just don't kill your laptop now. My ECS G551 gets pretty hot after a hr of warcraft 3 bnet, and thats at stock.

Heh, no. I was bummed to find out that I should have my Core speed significantly lower than it was, however. After using ATI Tools I have my 32MB 9000M (factory 220/200) overclocked at 225/304. The memory boost helps, but it's a bummer that I can't crank the core higher, I used to have it at 286, but this program is picking out artifacts at that speed which I didn't notice whilst playing... Have to take it all the way down to 225 to rid myself of them. Bummer... Anyhow, I think the CPU Overclock is impossible on this 'puter. Too bad too, I could OC it to over 1700 (from what I've read) if I were able to OC it at all. Go fig.

Upping the fsb a few mhz is prob yur best bet. If the Bios don't support overclocking of the fsb tho and you can't find a program like clockgen which supports the centrino motherboard chipset that happens to be in there then you might just be outta options, unless someone cracks the puzzle :)
most people overclocking mobile cpu's (like the mobile bartons and P4-m cpu's) are using desktop motherboards to do it, which makes their job much easier and drastically improves the cooling situation. Not to mention desktop boards that these people buy have all the overclocking features that laptops have probably never seen in a bios(could be a long time before/if we do see overclockable laptops hehe).

i've heard a few rumors about desktop and mini-atx type centrino boards coming out this summer, but i can't find a link and don't know if/when this will happen or even if the boards will let the enthusiasts push these things like they've wanted to since the first day they came out :)

ClockGen is pretty cool but it don't look like they support your chipset, which appears to be part of the intel i855 family
also i read a review of the centrino posted on that same site that has clockgen and, eventhough the review was older, the author seemed to be convinced of no way to overclock these things "yet" atleast.

too bad you can't use speedstep technology to your advantage. That is nothing but on the fly voltage/clock speed changes via software. If only we could access those controlls or trick the software and/or hardware into thinking the chip was a 1.6ghz for exmaple, in which case it would throttle up to that speed when it entered full speed mode, then you'd be set :)

ohh well, i would look forward to this puzzle not lasting much more than a few months. Someone somewhere is overclocking these i can sense it with my overclocking powers :)

good luck

Thanks a lot for the info if nothing else. I've searched the web up and down and I can't find a darn thing to overclock these little guys. I was amazed though, despite it being a 1.3GHz it's got a 1024KB L2 Cache, impressive indeed. They packed some power into 'em, but they're not letting us access 'em right now. Too bad... Hopefully somebody figures it out, but I doubt that'll be me, heh, not at this rate anyhow. But, if nothing else, I appreciate everything I've learned through this thread. If anyone learns anything, let me know! Such a mystery...
