40GB hard drive running winxp home - need to get 98 on there so i can dual boot to either os...i have the latest version of partition magic, what is the best way to get 98 on there so i don't screw up xp ??

here's what i'm thinking - please tell me if there is a better way

1) use partition magic to make a 3 GB partition & format it with fat32 (win xp partition will be ntfs)...should this partition be logical/primary/extended/none of the above ??

2) install win98 into the new partition - reboot

3) cross fingers & hope for the best

any thoughts/suggestions ??

edit - i realize this posts makes me look like a total noob...but the only dual-boots i've set up have been on new hard drives where i installed the os's in reverse order...just worried i'm going to screw this one up

That won't work. 98 will overwrite your master boot record that contains information that XP needs.
If you want to do it right I would trash the lot (using fdisk) and start again loading 98 first then from within 98 run XP off the CD choosing upgrade.
The alternative is really messy I've been there and I had to use Norton's Ghost with Partition Magic.

that's what i was worried about

would it be possible to do this by adding a 2nd hard drive - i've got an old 20GB drive laying around somewhere that i could install 98 on

lizardboy, I just got thru doing this dual boot xp/98se on two drives deal. I had both drives (20 gig WD and a 60 gig Maxtor D740X) setup as master/slave on my primary ide contoller. I formatted and partitioned both drives by using the XP cd after going into the bios and changing my boot up device to my cd rom. I have three partitions on both drives and formatted both drives using FAT32. I loaded 98se on the WD (logical drives C,D, and E). When it came time to load XP, I decided to reformat the Maxtor in NTFS (logical drives F, G, and H). Now XP "sees" all drives while 98 see just the Fat32 drive (C,D and E) which is what it should do. I didn't see the need to be able to transfer files from one o/s to another. So far, this configurations works great.

Oh yeah, after all that was done, I had to change both drives over to my Promise ATA133 controller card for the Maxtor.
