My Ipod (10GB windows) has been working fine for months now. Recently I plugged it in and Ephpod is saying that I have to reformat or whatever. And I try to click on the drive in Windows Explorer and it also claims I need to reformat. So I try it (thinkin I can just start over again) and there are errors when it attempts to finish. So now I'm left with an ipod that only displays a folder with an exclamation point and no way of formatting the drive or putting songs on my ipod.

what gives?

I had that problem once. The only way to fix it was to update the software on the ipod. Goodbye songs. At least firewire is fast.

i heard that the firmware that Apple provides can only be updated through a Mac.

So much disinformation in the world.

Select your operating system
I saw that too, but it claims you need to have iTunes installed. Is that true, or is that just because it's Apple saying it?

It may need the iPod service running for it to be able to service the updater. I don't remember if I had it installed when I updated mine or not. Why not just try it and if it doesn't work, install iTunes?
