We've all seen trailers before rented movies, and yes I know this one is supposed to suck but it was a redbox cheapy, however this is the first movie in my life that won't even let me fast forward. Is this a new thing or something strange with my player only tonight? I cannot pause, either; absolutely every function of my remote (playing it on an XBOX 360) I'm told "action not available".

Nah, happens all the time. It seems to be about 50/50 on the movies I rent at Redbox.

@*#( Fing SH*T. So this really is happening? This is honestly to God the first movie I've ever had this with.

Cock suckers, and they wonder why people want to pirate movies, if anything would push a person over the edge it's this, 10 minutes of watching bullsh*t trailers before starting it.

Dude...really? Just hit mute...or get up and get a snack while the trailers are playing...Once it gets to the movie menu, it'll stop...

Ain't technology great? It's just old school broadcast TV, except you have to drive, and pay to pick up your shows :^D

Pretty common, on blu-rays anyway, pisses me off.

This is how things work these days:

Prohibited operations without mandatory standards = A fucking stupid idea. I can't believe they continue to allow it with Blu-Ray (which should be for movie enthusiasts). Anyway, rental versions frequently abuse this.

Because most rental versions don't indicate anywhere that they are different from retail, this practice actually DISCOURAGES people from buying movies.

"Well I'm glad I didn't pay $20 for that!"

Slysoft AnyDVD HD on an HTPC, kiss your prohibited operations goodbye :)

as annoying as all of this is, I'm more annoyed by the Blu Ray tech promo ads on every god damn Blu Ray disc.

Ummm, I already have a fucking Blu Ray player; stop forcing this useless shit down my throat.

VLC for the fucking win.

Also, rip with DVDShrink, and reburn with whatever you like.
Same disc, no bullshit.

Second x2.

They can already make money on a movie at least twice - once in the theater and again for the home copy. Then they figured that they can put ads on the disc for even more money. Then they figured that they could be complete dicks and prevent you from skipping over the advertising content they worked so hard on.
(Ignoring the whole deal of selling the regular version, then the director's cut, then the extended edition, then the super-shiny edition, then the ultra-polished case version with a free Shamwow, then the...)

Good old VLC, just ignores those damned PUO flags.

Too bad it can't also inflict bodily harm on those who think up these kinds of things.

A lot of rental blu rays don't let you skip previews and ads, but I haven't seen one that didn't let you fast forward through them.

Half of my reasoning to build a HTPC. Really, that particular thing was a lot of the motivation.

This is also common on a lot of rented DVDs too. You cannot fast forward or skip the adds. No function on the remote works during and before the adds. I usually do something else during the adds and come back after 10 to 20 minutes when it is done.

This just another reason that you use a media center and rip and strip any movie you plan on watching....even if you get it from Redbox. It takes less than a minute of your input and you only have to wait 15 minutes or so but at least you don't have to deal with all the other crap on the disc.

This pisses me off to no end, makes me want to crack the disc in half. There's no reason we should be forced to watch the BS they put before the disc. It's bad enough on rentals but on a disc I bought, no way in hell.

Am I missing something? 16 mins to avoid 5 mins of previews?

burn without trailers and bs

yet another example of 'you guys make it easier for me to pirate rather than do it legit'
