No. I've seen rental versions that were not identified as such, and they had unskippable ads. I've had a chance to compare some of these to the retail version that allowed you to skip ads.

Also, some of the retail versions had no ads in the first place.
 
I've never really noticed this on any of the hundreds of discs I own, aside, occasionally, from the FBI warnings, which are only a few seconds long. /shrug

Strange, then perhaps US dvd discs meant for Europe (Region 2) have longer and more FBI warnings. The first seasons i own from stargate atlantis is horrible. Long animated menu's and a lot of warnings (60 seconds each) and no skipping. Indeed the (Region 1 dvd discs i own have less to none FBI warnings, now that i think of it) and sometimes not even copy protection.

But another issue is that when it is specifically meant for a certain country such as The Netherlands, Belgium or Germany, It is not unusual that there is also added a local BREIN/BAF message. These crooks are real criminals. Another example of a video message :
When people here in the Netherlands for example started to complain about the added (no skip)video messages where dvd copying is the same as stealing a car or any other stealing or robbing practice, another short video was added (at least this one can be skipped) where you have to watch actors thank you for buying the dvd (if you did that is).
Both are just as annoying by the way.

I can understand your point. I hope you understand my point better as well.

It might be nothing to the company but if enough people drop them because of ads, the ad companies are going to take notice and drop the revenue.

As far as the ads go, I hate those mother fockers. :sneaky:

Yeah - a lot of studios now only sell the 'Theatrical Release' to rental companies so if you rent from Redbox, Netflix, Blockbuster you are screwed. Can't skip the ads, no deleted scenes, no behind the scenes etc. If you want all of those features you have to buy the 'director's cut' or whatever they call it. Nice of them to bring back the long missed VHS viewing experience

Not illegal for backup purposes.

1. Buy BD or DVD
2. Rip disc
3. Place mint condition disc back into case and on the shelf
4. Burn backup
5. Play backup, allow kids & dog to scratch and bite all to hell, burn another one when its unplayable.

I do this with CD's too, as my car's CD player LOVES to scratch discs when they get ejected. Nothing infuriates me more than having to buy another copy at full price in the case that the media becomes unreadable or destroyed for any reason.

Little fockers I knew was crap and that's why I passed it over so many times but was desperate. It was pretty bad. I've seen worse, but it was not very good.

How about that more generic warning that you are forced to watch in four different languages.

I get the "I'll snap the disk" rage too, so I might look into using the AnyDVD software that was suggested if I upgrade my netflix box.
 
Some block you from using menu or FF but not skip. Others block you from using menu or skip but not FF. Yet others block you from using FF and skip but let you jump to the menu (Disney "FastPlay" movies, for example).

There is almost always ONE option. As Ichinisan said, there should have been a standardized way to do this.

Except that the standardized way probably would have been/will be the worst one for the consumer.

On the newer rented blu-rays you get an error message when hitting the menu button. On my PS3 it's "operation could not be completed" or something along those lines. Same error will pop up if you happen to run into one of the blu-ray disks that have unskippable ads, etc.. In some cases, the pop up menu button works where the regular menu option is disabled, but other cases that is disabled as well.

It's pretty damn annoying and all the more reason to build an HTPC with AnyDVD on it.

Furthermore, sometimes you can't use FF or Skip, but you can use Menu. Sometimes you can't use Menu, but you can use Title Menu.

It's a huge clusterf*ck.

He's saying that Blu-Ray is supposed to be a premium format, for movie enthusiasts. As such, there should be a standard way to skip the ads. I'm fine with prohibited operations if they're used only to make interactive things work correctly (games and such), but the BD alliance should mandate that you can skip ads that play automatically. They should force compliance with fines and replacement programs when a non-compliant disc is reported.
 
Advertising on tapes, DVDs and BluRays is evil.

We still have VHS tapes from when my kids were much smaller, and they have advertisements that are ridiculously out of date (especially the ads for software and the Disney website).
