Little AMD marketshare in N.A.

Hi you guys out there,

We ( www.athlon.de ) ask us, why AMD has such a little market share in the USA with their Athlon/Duron CPUs. I think the procentage of AMD is only 9% there.

But why? For example here in Germany (or Europe in general) AMD has a market share of nearly 30%!

Only 9% here? Really? I don't know the numbers, but that seems low. I think it's much higher if you look at people in the know. And I think their share is growing. 🙂

Also, intel has a HUGE advertising campaign here, with almost none for AMD. What's the ad environment there?
 
Its higher then 9%... I think worldwide its a bit over 20%... In the US its just slightly below the worldwide #.... US consumers are stupid trust me... I did sales for 2 years.
 
Hey, this is my first AMD system, and I love it! Before this AMD was always just the other cpu that couldn't quite do the job, wasn't up to snuff, just wasn't as reliable. Now that I've got one, I don't know that I'll ever go back to Intel. Anyone who's confident enough in their product to know that it can be "monkeyed" with and still take it is worth having in your system. Intel must be afraid that their chips can't take it, so they lock them up. Hehehe, when I was a teenager I tweaked my toy--Mustangs, then broncos, now I tweak my new toy. I'm a toys-r-us kid and I ain't ever growing up!!! 😉

The curse of Via 4 in 1 prevents me from really gushing about my AMD, but I'm generally happy with it. I would be back in the Intel camp for the next upgrade if their prices get in line with AMD's.

I think the 9% figure is probably old. For homebuilders &amp; small shops I would guess its more like 75% AMD or more.
 
I don´t know, where I read it and that was for 1/2 year, but I quite sure that it was 9%.
AMD is tradionally stronger in Europe.

In Germany are also no big AMD advertisements. Sometimes you can see AMD-logos at soccer-stadions, but just when weak teams play. But that it was.

Do you have Intel´s Blue Man group, too?
Intel started also here a big campaign for the P4.
But don´t know anyone buyind it.
 
In general, European consumers are more loyal to their local manufacturers than U.S. consumers, who have no loyalty at all. Especially in Germany, which represents a large chunk of the European market.

However, AMD may loose some of this loyalty. A large German consortium is paying a couple $Billion dollars to Intel to get them to open a new fab in Germany.
 
AMD has a fab in germany...it just makes sense. 🙂 Less distance for the chips to travel...less cost to the dealers...less cost to the consumers- more chips on the market! Whereas intel has no fab in germany- so those all have to be imported...and a higher price.

Now, of course, Intel still has 70% of the market there- but they have been a powerhouse so long that their name keeps them there because so many people recognize and trust Intel more than AMD based simply on past experiences/track record. It's a shame really because AMD really has had their sh!t together for almost 2 years now- but in time they will gain more respect and get a better rep and they will get even more of the market...I could be wrong, but it just seems logical with Intel's pricing (especially including RDRAM) in comparison to AMD's (DDR is cheap too 🙂) and the speed and power of the available processors that each has on the market.
 
For whatever reason I dont see any AMD ads here in the US.
It looks like deliberate marketing strategy.
Perhaps they want to secure peripheral markets first
(no offense). 😎

Esports is an example. Intel recently became a sponsor
of CPL (gaming league) here in the US. On the other
hand last week's XSi Q3A invitational in Europe was
sponsored by AMD.

Result is low consumer awareness of AMD brand in the US.
Typical american consumer would ask: what kind of Pentium is Athlon? 😀
