These things usually run over $150. At your local Target B&M.

For those who have these units, do they work? Are they effective? I was thinking of picking up one for my cats. :D

Actually the $89 price tag is only about $10 less than "normal". Don't know why yours are so much more, unless they are the somewhat newer, extra large model. Ours are always ~$99.00 around Northern CA.

These are a good product and a Godsend to cat owners everywhere. That's probably why you really never see them on sale. We've owned one for the last couple of years and the price has never changed. Key factors for proper operation and longevity: Keep it clean. I don't mean free of cat stuff either. There are little side rails the "Comb" rides on. If they get too dirty it effects the movement and can damage the unit. Also a good idea, (depending on the usage) to do a "total cleaning" of the units once a month. Doesn't take long and is not messy. We didn't maintain our first one very well. I guess we were immediatly spoiled by the wonder of this product and neglected it. Long story short it got dirty, the wire to the motor got damaged and we eventually had to replace the whole thing. Expensive mistake. Also make sure to use good "Scooping Cat Litter." Don't pinch pennies here. Trust me, the litter will last much longer than you're accustomed to and it makes the whole operation smoother. You can also recycle/reuse the "holding bins" for the waste. We have two VERY LARGE cats. I'm talking in the 20lb range, with one bigger than that. So we have one Electric cat pan and one regular pan. We keep them in the garage, as the cats can get there through a door from the kitchen. Works like a charm. Do yourself a favor and get this thing. You will be amazed and grateful.

I agree. These things are awesome. And it doesn't freak the cats out like we thought it would.

These things work great!! I got mine off egay for about $120. Anything under $100 would be a good price.

This thing is a life saver for my girlfriend's place. A LOT easier to maintain. Just make sure you buy the right kind of litter... They jam with the wrong kind.

I'd spring for the tent if you can get it, so it has a cover. Kitties tend to spray litter around the edges sometimes... ;)

Cats use it fine, haven't seen them get freaked yet. Uses D batteries in case you lose power.

Yeah, my cats used to use it and then sit and watch it at first. Seemed facinated by the thing. Strange cats.

Well, I did the same thing at first :D
Where can I find the tent? One of our cats kicks the litter everywhere except where it counts.

I had one a while back. But I finally gave up on the unit after about 6 months. For one thing, it's pretty big (especially if you put the little ramp on.) It was hard finding a good spot for it. I never used batteries so I always had to find someplace near an AC outlet. Another problem I had was the motor wasn't powerful enough to scoop the litter all the way into the bin. So it would go forward, lock up, go back, go forward, lock up, go back, etc. until about 10 times and then it just stops. And my stupid cat never got the fact that he no longer had to bury his turds. He'd sit there scooping litter on top of it which made for two problems. First was the locking up problem I mentioned earlier (too much sand in one spot.) Second, the litter would get flung out of the pan and would make a mess. The tent might be a good solution but when I priced it at Petsmart it was like $40. So all in all, I wasn't too thrilled with the whole thing and it went into the garbage and I went back to the old fashion litter box. If that becomes too much of a problem then I guess it's time for ol Dusty to become an outside cat...

We bought one of the deluxe/extra big ones and the sensor died in less than a year. Otherwise though it was great, made cleaning it easy!

We have had one for about two and a half years now. I actually bought it as a Christmas present for my girlfriend in 1998 (don't laugh!). Anyway, it has worked very well for us and we have had no problems with it. I hadn't been around cats before, but from I understand, it really reduces the litter cleanup workload.

You'll probably end up reusing the plastic trays you put in to hold the clumped litter and waste. They are very sturdy and are a little too expensive to change out every week or so.

Hmm. I was thinking of getting one of these, but one of my cats is very skiddish.

I don't want to do anything that disuades her from using the litterbox. Does it do the clean-up thingy a while after they're out of the box? Sometimes she goes back to the box a few times before she's done.

There is a 10 minute delay before the cleaning cycle starts. It will not start if the cat is in the box, and the timer resets if the cats leaves the box and re-enters.

Purchased mine last winter...Talk about a sweeeeet product.

Heck, my cat likes it soo much that after he makes a smelly mess sometimes he scratches the red light tryin to turn it on faster. It's so funny watching him do that. I believe he has seen me use that switch to turn it on faster during cleaning and he thinks it is related to the light.

Cats are sooo funny...
