Lithium Ion Battery Charging Question

I bought a Canon PowerShot S40 Digital camera and there are no instructions for how long I'm suppose to charge the battery for the first time use. Now I know a little bit about batteries and I know some batteries you have to charge for at least 12 - 24 hours to ensure a long life cycle. I put the battery on its charge and let it charge for a little over an hour and it says its good to go but is that okay to use it yet? Any input would be appreciated.

yes it should be ok to use it. I doremember my sony li-ion battery charging in about hour, but suggested leaving it on for a few more hours to ensure max charge

it depends on how much power is being supplied to the battery from the charger, and what the specs of the battery is.

i would be likely to trust the charger in the issue... it's not like it's going to overcharge unless canon gave you a crap charger...

The Lithium Ion battery for the S40 charges real fast. Probably a little over an hour. The batteries I think you are referring to are nickel cadmium which take like half a day to charge.

As long as the green light is on after you charge, your battery should be ready to go. I've charged my battery for only a couple mins and used it without having any problems. I've had an S40 for 6 months or so and the battery is still going strong.
