Ok, I see on the Desktop thread that there are a few people who use this program. I'm have a few questions about it.

Why do you own it

What does it add/take away from MS's normal shell

How much time/difficulty does it take to setup

How much do you need to know about computers to install it sucessfully

Any other usefull firsthand or other information you can give me would be helpful.

Thanks

i really think you'd be better off just installing mandrake or something. in my experience, litestep was buggy and hard to configure.

You own it (it's free, by the way) because it gives you more control over the look and feel of Windows.

It adds or takes away anything you want. It's fully customizable through the use of modules. You can add a module that checks your e-mail and puts notices on your deskopt, or you can take out things like the system tray module to save resources.

To setup default themes, it takes as much times as installing the distro, which is a matter of minutes plus a restart. To install new themes, all you need to do is edit a few lines in a config file and you're up and running. To fully customize an existing theme or make a new theme, it takes a lot of patience and experimentation.

You don't need to know anything more about computers to use Litestep than you do to use Windows. It just makes the interface easier (in the sense that you configure it to your liking).

That's why I ended up going back to Explorer. LS wasn't hard to configure, per se (took a long time, though). However, it developed very strange quirks over time, such as not allowing a software shut down, not allowing me to log off, hanging randomly on startup, etc.

Try it out if you want, but just make sure you know how to get back to Explorer in an emergency.
