every1 is singing the praises of lite-on (which is fine), but you should know they
don't honor their warranty. i purchased a retail internal dvd player last year from
newegg. it died after six months (which is fine), but when i tried to contact customer
service, i got no response. i tried twice and gave up.

Try a few more times??? Did you talk to anyone from Liteon??

You gave up pretty quickly, man... what do you mean by no response? They didn't answer their phone, or what?

they're probably in a very different timezone and you may have been just after business hours.

i also keep hearing that their DVD players die quickly in a couple of months. Does anyone know a better dvd player I can buy?

Mine died.
Not fastest, always small buffer size.

I don't think that they need such a large buffer with their technology. As for CDrws being too loud I dunno...I've own a Acer 2x6x2x, Sony 12x8x32x, and a 48x24x48x Liteon...and the LiteOn does very well.

As for the DVDs keep trying I guess. MY bro's pc was build in November and we have the same DVD drive (i have a white one though. His is black) and his has been chugging along just fine while mine has had HEAVY use since January

If anything perhaps their DVD drives have loud spinups...but after that initla 4 seconds its pretty silent. But I find it hard to criticize a company that makes extremely high quality products for very cheap. Not often does that happen.

Just out of curiosity I tried to go to their website "www.lineonit.com" (got the web site address off of my CDROM) and it could not locate the remote server. Did they change their website; go out of business or what?

The following address worked:
Liteon

amoralist did you leave a message via their website? Their website instructs you to read the FAQ and if they do not answer your question you can leave a message and Liteon will get back to you. I did this with Corsair and they sent me an email within one day. It is worth a try. I don't know if you tried this or not as you never indicated your method of contacting them and you have not responded to anyone's question since you posted this message.

I get flamed every time I say it, but I tend to agree. My 32x burner is running strong, but I have maybe 5 dead assorted liteon drives in my basement.

Just seems they have a high failure rate.

And yes their old, but they died quite a while ago.

A personal experience with Liteon...I bought a 48X CDR from a vendor at a computer show. About a month later it died. I contacted Liteon and asked them to replace it. They said I had to take it back to the store I got it from. I contacted them again and said it was from a computer show and the store was over 5 hours away. They responded again that I would have to deal with them. I called that store and they said they would not do any warranty work, I had to go through Liteon. So I bought a new (non-Liteon) CDR.

Dead drives? Lol, never had one in my life! My 486 still has a 4x liteon drive from 1996! My amd K6 system still has a liteon 24x from 1997. My new PC has a 52x24x52 liteon i bough i week ago. I dont think its noisy. If u dont like the noise - why dont u burn at 16x or below??! U have the choice. Of course, at 48x its gonna be noisy. Its like blaming Formula 1 bollides for being too fast. I've put my trust in liteon once again by preferring their cdrw to others. Liteon served me well to this point.

You can burn at high speeds and be quiet. Go look at a decent burner like a Samsung or Plextor. They dont sound like rockets taking off. :p

Lite ons aren't bad, but I bought a Samsung Combo DVDRW 48x24x48x16 that is extremely quiet.

I don't think it is unreasonable to expect at least a reply for a product that has a 1 year waranty. When it died well within its waranty period. I bet you like to take it up the ass

6 out of 7 lite-on drives that I own or replaced are still going strong, oldest one over a year ago. I had a disc explosively disintegrate once which gutted and killed the drive, but that would have happened in any manufacturers drive.
