y buy it like this, go to nexthardwareshop.com and pick up a lite-on 24x10x40 for 83 bux shipped, OEM drive. i have ordered two from them, and they are sweet....this drive rocks the party. pay an extra 2.50 to eliminate the MIR hassle, i'm all for it.

Not even close. There are several cheap CDRW makers that find thier way under several different brand names and some times the drive being resold changes eventhough the packaging remains the same. Unless you have actually checked the hardware or gotten a confirmation from someone else, don't suggest you know who makes it.

That's one way to check, but I've still heard of instances with some companies where the hardware is changed and they don't bother to change the description on the box.
 
I bought it yesterday at CompUSA for $100 - $20 rebate = $80. I see nothing on the box about Smart-Burn technology, but it does have Buffer Under Run Technology. It came with Nero 5.5.5.2 and seems to be an excellent drive. I've burned several close-to-full discs (630mb) in under 5 minutes. Been having a few problems with burning audio CDs (converting audio filters on the fly), but I think that has more to do with XP than the drive.
