hey anyone

when I try to burn a DVD in my Liteon 16X DVD+/-R and +/-RW DRive it gets stuck at 1% and then the message comes up "Burn Failed at 8x (11,088)" all the time. I don't know how to correct this at all and would like someone to at least give we a suggest about fixing this.

Yes it is a dual-layer burner and I use Nero Suite, I also tried Nero Premium 7 but they all give me the Burn Failed message. Can you help?

Nero is very "sometimey". Sometimes it will do what you want it to do, sometimes it wont. Are you trying to burn a movie dvd?

Yes I am trying to burn a movie, I am also trying to burn some DVD files I created when I converted a file to DVD. I even tried to create a Data DVD but that didn't work.

Hmm...I know a lot of people have complained about Nero's instability.

EDIT: And where are my manners?? Welcome to Anandtech!

Oh, and what are your system specs? It'll be a lot easier to help diagnose later problems if we all knew your system specs. As you can tell, a lot of us put them in our signatures (like mine)

Thanks for the welcome. What is a good burning program to use? Also, I was wondering if it couldn't be the burner it self.

What media are you using currently? I have a Lite-on that just refuses to burn with CMC Verbatim 8x DVD+Rs (error similar to what you described), although my BenQ will burn this media just fine, as will a friend's NEC (all with Nero 6 OEM).

You may want to check out http://club.cdfreaks.com - plenty of info and reviews for all things optical.

First suspect has to be the media, cheap/poor media will screw you every time.

cdfreaks should be required reading, look in the liteon forum for media recomendation.

I use Samsung DVD's to burn my media on. However, I would like to know which program besides nero can I use to burn my media to disks?

I was having this for a while as well, but the burned CD's after the message failure still worked absolutely fine. My solution was to reinstall the software associated with the "fail" messages. Could be different though, since I was using an NEC 16x DVD writer with Nero 6 Ultra.

For movies DVD decrypter can burn them.

Samsung DVDs, they're a rebrand but god knows which ones. If you can get hold of some TY discs, they are the best ones out there and well worth the money imo.

I often have to summon the devil in order for nero to complete a burn, but yet I still used it.

I reccomend removing the disc, drawing an encircled pentagram with your right index finger, once on the side for writing on, once on the underside on the hub. From that your burn should make it to at least 50%. When it nears that point, you need to actually do the summoning. The phrase I've found works best is....

"O, great and powerful Satan, I summon thee to assist in the successful recording of this demonically blessed DVD."

If that doesnt cut it, you'll have to move your computer into your back yard. Pick up a container of Coleman fuel or lighter fluid. Draw a giant encircled pentagram, big enough for you, your computer and the recordable media to perform a demonic ceremony in. Light it up and summon the devil there. This works best at 6AM or PM (whenever its darker outside) on June 6th.

I just had a similar problem with my own drive (NEC) and was using Fuji media. I was burning 60% of the time sucessfully. I replaced the IDE cable, made sure DMA is enabled, the burner and HD are not on the same channel, the Burner is set to master, updated the firmware of the Burner, updated the VIA 4in1 drivers and the IDE driver. None of it worked until I got the new IDE driver for my board. Now my burn rates are about 80% with this media. (i also have a cake box of Verbatim media that burns at 100% at 12x, drops to 80% or so with 16x)

Make sure drive is running in DMA mode. Next download and install CloneDVD (free trial). Reburn and check for error.

How old is the drive? Is it being used in an environment where there are smokers or cook a lot of fried foods or unusually dusty? Maybe the optics need cleaning - worth a try. Cleanliness is really next to godliness with optical drives.
