LiteOn 4x DVD+R/RW Drive for $99 shipped

any thoughts on this drive??

I am either going to get this, or the optirite

Here i found a review for you.

We have one and it's a little picky about media, but this isn't unusual among DVDRW drives. CompUSA's cheapies won't work (they play, but with increasingly frequent freezeups as the DVD plays), but Memorexes work beautifully and are almost as cheap, at the moment. A little slow reading a just-inserted DVD, but a reliable drive so far.

Where is this 20% off coupon? I looked through all my Dell Deal eMails but I cant find it in anyone of them. Can anyone shed some light on this?

Update: If you use the 20% off coupon (that many were sent), it takes away the automatic 15% off reflected in the $99 price...So with the 20% off coupon, you only save another $5 or so. So the drive, with tax, comes out to just under $100. Warm, but at that price I'd probably go with the Optiwrite for $20 more. (Dual format).

I have the 20% off coupon code, but it will actually only give you 5% off because it has already gave you 15% off the product already. But hey what the heck it's 5% off it's something. PM me if you need the coupon code 🙂 Forgot one more thing the coupon code expire today.

but RMA support at dell is much much worse. also you cant get black at dell, only white. newegg has both

After rereading this statement and doing some of my own research I have found this to be true and am going with NewEgg again.

I can't recall the exact model but is this the liteon dvd-burner that's flashable to support the dvd-r format?

I did a bit of searching and couldn't find any lite-on model that could be flashed to dual 🙁

edit: I have a lead, did some reading on a french forum (difficult because I don't speak french) and apparently the hardware and chipset of the 401s (this model) and the 411s (dual format drive) are identical. The only thing holding you back would be a firmware flash, but this was an old thread. I need more recent info. If this is possible, I will be ordering one tonight!

I guess the information on the dual flashing is not that available, it will be nice. Since that is the only thing holding it from being a really hot deal.

From Dell site:
Access Time: DVD: 160 ms; CD: 140 ms
Media Format: DVD single/dual layer (PTP, OTP), DVD-R(3.9G/4.7G), DVD-R multi-borders, DVD+R, DVD+R multi-sessions, DVD±RW, DVD-ROM (single layer / dual layer); CD-DA, CD-ROM, CD-ROM/XA , Photo-CD, Multi-session, Karaoke-CD, Video-CD, CD-I FMV, CD Extra, CD Plus, CD-R , and CD-RW
Media Type: DVD / CD

What's the dell's phone#? Unless it's a typo, this drive is dual-format...

from another forum:

"We proved a 401s can be bumped to a 411s and burn -R media. The current firmware rev is not perfect yet but its getting there with about a 75% playback compatibility in 10 different readers here, compared to same media burned in a Pioneer 106. The strange and interesting thing is the 411s itself is in the 25% of those that reject the burned discs. I am keeping Liteon up to date with the tests and they are going to keep me updated with firmware revisions so for interested users I will keep info coming on this."
