LiteOn 24x burner with Imation 12x media

I recently bought a LiteOn 24x burner and I was burning a couple of CDs. I am using Imation 12x media and I didn't turn down my burner speed. So, it burned the CDs at 24x. Is this normal? I didn't get any errors, so I am assuming everything was OK. I just wanted to check if I need to change this or if I can conitnue burning at this speed.

It may just be fine, but sometimes you'll find problems in other drives. Depends on the burner, the media, and the other drives.

My friend will burn CD-Rs on cheap media at full speed, but my PC drives sometimes choke on them. Ironically, my Mac reads the same CD-Rs just fine. When this happens I reburn the disc on my Mac and then the PC will be able to read it fine. 😛

My 24x Liteon loves the Imation 12x media never a bad burn with those cdrs' almost 100 at 24 speed..

If you burn a disk higher than its rated speed, it will produce more errors. Any drive can handle the read errors but if there's a lot then you'll notice some problems.

I have been buying 16x cdrs and burning at 24 speed on my Liteon 24102b as well. I have burned over 100 cdr's without any unusable cds. I'm using Nero 5572 90 percent of the time, then Fireburner 2.17, CloneCd, Winiso to convert, and for a laugh 1 cd a year using Roxio EZCD 5.02.

Yeah, I am not sure if the burning software matters, but I've been using Nero 5.5.7.2

Just like with any rating they can be exceeded. Imation just rated the 12x media at 12x to ensure 100% error proof burning on any 12x burner. The LiteOn is a quality burner (have one myself), so it produces less errors. Just like AMD rates a Duron to run safely at 600mhz doesn't mean it won't run safely at 1 Ghz 🙂

Same here.. I've used both Imation 12x and 24x in my LiteOn 24x burner and it burns at 24x with no problem whatsoever with both media. The media must be guaranteed for 12x, but can handle faster speeds.

From reports, the Lite-On isn't a bad burner, but as far as media compatibility goes, the Lite-On certainly isn't one of the best. YMMV.

The results here are a lot different than what I saw with the Plextor drive. When I tested the Plextor drive, it was able to reach 24x speeds with the Taiyo Yuden, PNY and Imation media. In the case of the Lite-On drive, it was able to write at 24x only with the Kodak and the Ritek based CompUSA media.

Like with the Plextor drive, there were a few types of media rated at 24x that would not write at those speeds with the Lite-On drive. As I mentioned above, the new 24x media from Taiyo Yuden did not want to write at 24x with this drive. I'm hoping that Lite-On will add the new version of the media to their firmware soon. I was not really surprised that the PNY media did not write at 24x. This media is of low quality and many drives have had problems writing to it at anything over 12x. I suppose I should be happy that the drive could write to it at 20x. The last type that had problems was the Fuji media. Earlier this year, Fuji started relabeling their 16x media to say that they supported 24x speeds. If you're a frequent CDRLabs reader you know that I have never gotten this media to work at those speeds.

Most drives have only written to this media at 16x so I was happy to see it work at least at 20x with this drive. I didn't get any coasters, so I can say that Lite-On's new Safe-Burn technology does work. After running all these tests I felt that I could insert any media and know that the drive would produce a readable CD.

Again, let me remind you that your mileage may vary and that these results are for the Lite-On LTR-24102B only. Just because some of the media worked at 24x with this drive that does not mean they will with other 24x drives.

The good news is that if the Lite-On can write to Imation media at 24X, it's probably OK. Again, YMMV though.

I burn 12x media at 20x and have no problems, and burn 16x media at 24x...

No problems, good quality drive!
