Can't go wrong with Lite-on and I don't buy that their drives are somehow cheaper made. I have 4 Lite-On drives in my own systems and have put countless others in systems I have built for people. You also might like to know that the new Compaq servers we have been getting in the last few months have Lite-On drives and power supplies in them.
As for other CD drives....
Sony is crap
Toshiba is ok but I've had a few die on me very early(used them in everything before I switched to Lite-On)
Mitsumi is solid but unspectacular.
Creative Labs is crap
Afreey is good. Much like Lite-On they aren't well known but build quality stuff
Plextor is good but overpriced. I had one of their SCSI CDRW and it was a good drive but cost about 2x more than it should.
