Lite-On BlueRay drive + Philips DVD Burner = $190

Happy you posted that link, but not because of the price. It is because I read some of the User Comments. Here are a few:

"It does not play all BluRay Titles. Either the software or firmware needs to be updated. There is not one reference to this player on the Lite On web site support pages. No search will find the player either. Some kind of support would be helpful from the manufacture!"

"Plays about half of the blu ray movies that i tried... def not a HDCP issue, it just doesnt play some of the newer Blu-ray media apparently - most likely needs a firmware update to play the newer media, however this drive model isnt even listed on liteon's(or Phillips) website for support..."

"not all BD work"

"I tried 2 blue ray discs with this player on my HTPC. The first one would not play at all. The picture was black. The second disc rendered fine as long as it was a reduced window, but when I would switch to full screen, the lower half of the picture became vertical lines..."

I am not sure that buying this BD drive is a such a good move.

I am confused that this is a Blue-Ray DVD ROM only.
I had an impression that all Blue-Ray players are automatically writable too. That was one of the big advantage of Blue-Ray over HD-DVD.
You dont have to think about if it is also writable.

Is that not the case anymore?

No, that was never the case. There are Blu-Ray writers, but this is only a reader.

So someone investing in HDDVDplayers and DVDs is wasting there money? I have not jumped in to this BR/HD thing yet, I thought you needed a HD plasma or LCD to see great PQ, I have a 3 year old 50 inch rear projection that does HD1080i, is it woth investing in BR player like this one and connect to TV? I also have Samsung Syncmaster 215TW lcd for my PC?

I have a 65" RP TV that does 1080i, and an HD-DVD player, and yes, you will still see great PQ 🙂

good price but you also limit yourself to one of the competing formats. I think I'll wait for the LG combo to drop to around 200 or 170...

Did you miss the memo? HDDVD died like 2 weeks ago

Apparently it's impossible for some people to discuss this without going back to format war discussions.

I'm locking the thread, but I'm going to stop giving so many second chances on this.
