I ordered one too. If it is junk, easy as pie to return it. The only thing I am looking for with this unit is to tape my favorite shows, permanently. It should do this without any problems.

Wow, this can't be right.

In comparison, the DVD recorder page at BestBuy lists the prices for the other various brands of DVD recorders at $449.00 - 1199.00 (higher end units look like they have HrdDrives as well) But still...

Either this Lit-On unit is missing some key features the others have ...or just maybe Lite-on is jumpin into a new market with a new price point.

Does anyone know if this Lite-On unit records in higher res than a vcr?

This unit would be great for archiving shows off my DTivo instead of using the lower res/quality of Vidtape.

Hmmm, Santa may have to drop one of these under the tree this year.

Wow, this is HOT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! The cheapest I have seen this recorder is $299 at Newegg.com. The fact that it also has a Firewire input makes this incredibly HOT!

Let's hope it's not a mistake and that they fulfill the backorders quickly. 🙂

Seems like a good deal. However, with a networked Replay and DVArchive (which can suck the programs off the Replay to my PC) and Womble (which can edit the programs on my hard drive if desired), I have a hard time figuring out WHY I'd want a standalone DVD recorder box...Plus, the Lite-On box doesn't seem to have any automated program info--Programming goes back to the dinosaur days of normal VCRs, where you program only by time and channel.

Is there a good reason?

(Serious question).

Hehe answered my own question about recording res from the Lite-On spec page,

Lite-On lvw - 5001 DVD Recorder Spec Page

VIDEO RECORDING QUALITY :
Mode _Hour _BitRate _Encode _NTSC

HQ__ 1 __9.5Mpbs __MPEG2 __720X480
SP__ 2 __5.1Mpbs __MPEG2 __720X480
EP__ 3 __2.5Mpbs __MPEG2 __352X480
SLP_ 4 __1.7Mpbs __MPEG1 __352X240

So it will record in 720 x 480 mpeg2 but limited to 2 hours on 4.7 GB disc.
Spec page mentions "up to 6 hr recording" but that mode isn't listed in chart. Probably at mpeg1 ...heavily compressed.

superflySocal : Looks like it does have a TV/CATV tuner for programmed recording.

Listed Playback Formats Supported:

1. DVD-Video
2. DVD+VR (DVD+VR format is compatible with DVD-Video in most case)
3. Video CD
4. Super VCD
5. Audio CD
6. MP3
____Maximum number of files recognizable : 1000 files
____Compression rate : between 32 kbps and 320 kbps
7. JPEG
____Maximum number of pictures recognizable : 1000 files

With this you don't have to pay a monthly charge, otherwise I would buy last years Replay TV with the NIC.
A question about the automated program recording on ReplayTV and/or TIVO, if I want to record a show that runs from 7-8 on channel 4, then record a show from 8-9 on channel 5 that for some strange reason starts at 7:57, will it start recording that show at 7:57 or 8? Will it record the 7:00 show? Or does the overlapping of shows screw up the programming? That's why I still like my VCR and to record by hand, I get to set the start and stop times.

Yes, you can do that but how long will it take?
Also, even at the highest res on replaytv, there is still pixelation artifact.

I'm thinking of getting one these but I have a question. Would i be able to transfer my VHS tape movies to DVD with this machine?

If they are original, store bought tapes, then unfortunately no. Macrovision copy protection would make the DVD copies useless.

But if you are referring to home movies that you have made of weddings, birthdays, etc., then it would would perfectly.

I notice that this unit is on backorder. Hopefully this isn't the kind of thing that we will have to wait a long time for.

The LiteOn DIVX/DVD Player took almost a month to be readily available after it was listed for purchase from PC Club and its website. I remember being told "It's on the way from China" and it was delayed because of various Port strikes.

May this one arrive much sooner. 😉

Based on bitrates, EP should be 4 hours and SLP should be 6 hours

actually, the one at fry's (at least in houston) is a cyberhome. One major difference is that the liteon has built in firewire support for dv transfers while cyberhome does not.

bb also list dvi output!

I ordered this pretty early on, so they must not have had very many available. Regardless, I sure as heck am going to wait for it!
