Lite-On or NEC... which DVD drive is best for me?

I rip my kids' cd based games using Alcohol 120% so to allow these games to be played on a virtual CD and hence preserve the original. The little ones will grow into them in time but without backing up they will get ruined by the oldest first.

Also, my brother backs up his personal movies ripping with DVD Decrypter stripping out files with DVD Shrink and burning with Nero.

His needs are different than mine but still I don't know which brand is best for either of us.

Here's a couple newegg links to the two drives I'm considering for him.
LiteOn
NEC

I think I would need the RAW mode but...

I'd go with NEC. If you don't mind black color, ChiefValue has it with free shipping...

Edit: Link to ChiefValue being censored for some reason. Go to Pricewatch.com and search for "ND-3550," it's the first one on the result list.

I've had good success w/ LiteOn drives, but my favorite feature is the short depth (170mm) since I build alot of SFF's.

Lite-on: historically good readers, often better with DVD+R media, infrequent and uninspired firmware updates.

NEC: solid burner, and it isn't a Lite-on. 🙂

From my own personal experience (I own several NEC 3500a) and what I've read, NEC has had a reputation as an awesome DVD burner, but just an average reader, while LiteOns (especially their cdrw drives) have a reputation for being able to read just about anything, but dvd burn quality just wasn't quite up to snuff compared to the best.

Check out the current Bestbuy deal on a nice Plextor over in the Hot Deals forum. Dunno if it's a better drive than either of the ones mentioned, but it's not junk, and the deal is hot...
