Lite-On LTD163 locking computer

My Lite-On DVD drive locks my machine when I try to have it read a disc if it hasn't been used in a while. It will continually try to read the disc, as indicated by noises, but then will just lock the machine and flash the light. Ejecting the disc shows that it is not spinning (heh). Resetting the machine does no good, as the light will continue to flash, and the drive is not detected. If I power down, it will come back working fine. Any ideas as to what is causing this? Here's my system specs:

Try upgrading to the latest firmware. I'm not sure if this issue is directly addressed, though I know it fixed plenty of other things. Give it a try, it can't hurt.
