I think I will just buy the lite on 411s that will be on sale on BF. One of the other forums are saying they are hardware identical to the 811s. I think I will take my chances on a firmware upgrade.

Great post none the less.

Are these the same people that were hoping that you could change the Lite-On single format drive into a dual format drive with a firmware upgrade?? I wouldn't bet on firmware upgrading a 411s to a 811s happening, but these's nothing wrong with a little wishful thinking. ;)

I suppose. Unless they are lying I see pleanty of them have done it. I haven't done any searching to find the how to since I don't intend to buy that model. That forum does not allow such instructions.

If it doesn't happen I will just have to buy a different one next year. Prices should be lower by then . ;) Heck they should be faster by next year too.

Damn, that is a great price for a Lite-On 8x DVD±R. The $146 and $154 are within driving distance too. :D I think it's almost time to upgrade my Lite-On CD-RW to DVD±R. I watch AnandTech News all the time and I never even heard Lite-On introduced an 8X DVD±R. Thanks for the heads up.

Dont forget the Memorex 8X that is coming out this month.Memorex 8X Dual Format Recorder Basically all the companies are coming out with 8X drives and now are working on getting the 16X drives developed for launch in Spring 2004.What I want to see is reviews on the 8X burners and will make my choice on the one that writes with the least amount of errors, compatability with popular media and all the burning software, etc.Patience is your friend at this time.I will wait another few weeks to see how these burners come out in the reviews.Error free burns are more important to me than the lowest price.

Hmmm, looks like the Lite-On only does 8x in +R, useless for me....I prefer -R. I'll stick with my 411S :)

Are any of these recorders ever going to do DVD-RAM? I was thinking about building a HTPC and seeing that a bunch of the home A/V DVD recorders do DVD-RAM, I thought it'd be nice to see in a computer drive, too.

The drives mentioned in this thread are computer DVD+R or DVD-R drives, also known as "burners". They are not stand alone A/V drives you simply hook up to your TV. I doubt any home electronics maker will ever use DVD-RAM. Not enough PC's use DVD-RAM, the media is more expensive (sometimes over 20 times more expensive), and I think the prevalent DVD media standard in the future will be DVD+R/RW. DVD+R/RW simply has too many advantages to ignore. :wine:

"Dual-layer recording is much trickier than single-layer recording. However, dual-layer recording techniques developed for Blu-ray (see 3.13) have been adapted for recordable DVD. Write-once (+R and -R) recordable DVD-9 discs, which hold almost double the amount of data or recording time (see 3.3), should show up around the end of 2004. Dual-layer rewritable discs are harder to get working, but they may show up a year or two later. Recordable drives will cost about the same as regular drives (since only firmware changes are required to record two layers) and the discs will cost between 1.2 to 3 times as much as single-layer discs."

from here.

If hardware is the same this should be possible.I did flash my LDW401S (DVD+R) to LDW411S(dual format drive) then flashed newest firmware ES0E and it works.I've tried couple of DVD-R and they work fine in stand-alone player.I didn't notice any problems.Newest firmware fixed many issues this drives had with "-" discs. So I think it should be possible to make this drive 8x LDW811S in the near future.
