Lite-On DVD-Roms: LTD-163/163D vs. LTD-165H

Noticed the two different models on the liteonit.com.tw site the other day. Both are 16/48x DVD/CD drives, and their respective spec. pages are essentially identical, i.e. just different wording/marketing in some secitons, so why the two different models?

TIA>

Thanks for the reply, Prototype.

Yeah, I figured it wasn't out yet, or that it wasn't available in the US, because it's not on pricewatch.com yet.🙂

I looked over the the spec pages again and the 165H's support for "Multi-Read & DVD-Multi" (whatever that is) is the only difference I saw.

<< The DVD Multi specification covers all currently developed formats which have been approved by DVD Forum, including:

DVD-Video
DVD-ROM
DVD-Audio
DVD-R
DVD-RW
DVD-RAM
DVD-Video Recording
>>

So, if the 165 supports all of these formats, I assume the 163 supports less, otherwise, what's the difference? What formats aren't supported by the 163?

I emailed Lite-On about the release timeframe for the 165H, and here is what they had to say...

Hi,

Thank you for your interest in our Lite-On Products. The LTD-165H should be
available around the end of May. There won't be any bunddled software for
playback of DVD-Audio.

Regards,

Tania

Subject: LTD-165H availability?

When is the LTD-165H 16X DVD-Multi drive expected to be available? Do you
have any information in regards to bundled software for playback of
DVD-Audio?

Thanks,
Brian

Looks to me like the main difference between the drives is the DVD-Audio support. That would be very nice if there is playback software available when it comes out which is a big ?? in my book. Regardless, I will probably hold off buying a drive to replace my failed Pioneer until this one comes out...
