Lite On DVD problem

I just got a lite on dvd 163 IDE and it reads dvd's fine, but it won't read cd's (pressed or burnt).

It recognizes the cd's and I usually can see the main directory structure, but nothing will install from a cd(either pressed or burnt) and I can't do a copy from cd to hd.

It came with the latest firmware and I can't re-flash it with the same/lower.

I have tried it in the same box under XP and ME.

Any ideas?

I'll presume the 163 is IDE (not that I know of any Lite-On products that are SCSI...)

What other drives to you have on your IDE? Which are Master/Slave, Primary/Secondary?

Do you have a CD-capable DOS boot disk? If so, boot to DOS, put a CD in with a text file on it and EDIT the
file to make sure the drive can read data from a CD. If it can, it's probably a Windows issue.

currently it's primary slave...
nothing is on the master right now(was a plextor 12*10*32 but disconected when I foudn this problem)

It just baffles me on the read dvd, not cd.

I have tried it in dos using a windows ME setup disk, but it's flaky there too.

I expect it to be DOA, but want to try anything before messing with shipping it back

It sounds like either DOA or a controller card incompatibility to me. Try it in a different system. If symptoms persist,
take it back.

Hey this is kind of a longshot but hey you never know... I had a similar problem with my Lite-On burner, that wouldn't read any discs, and the solution to my problem was to use a standard IDE cable, NOT an UltraDMA66/100/133 cable (used for hard drives). Dunno if this had anything to do with my mobos chipsets (AMD760 and VIA KT133A both with the VIA 686B Southbridge) but that worked for me!

I think i tried the cable switcheroo trick. I know I started with a 100 rounded cable then used another cable can't remember if it was 66 or 33.
