From what I have read on several boards the following will be on sale at Office Depot the day after Thanksgiving:

Lite-On dual format DVD/CD combo rewritable drive $89.99 AR.
MODEL LiteOn LDW-411S

Thanks to GrufalFourmet at FW among others for posting this.
That's all I know. Go forth and bring back more info about this.

Ummm, dvd burner under $100. Yummy, one of my predictions came true but the other will not. I doubt we will see any dvd recordable media for FAR this xmas. That is the only drawback in getting a dvd recorder is that the media is still too expensive.

Thanks about the heads-up for the drive.

there's these 10pk optimum 2x (or was it 4x?)DVD-R for 6.99 but YMMV. at staples.

and there's this site that sells DVD-R 50pk 2x (could possibly burn at 4x) that sells for 25 bucks or 100 for 50, (all kind of combinations that singles out to 50 cent per CD) at a website, this deal is posted somewhere on this forum, that's pretty cheap dunno how good the discs are but they can't be too bad and you can stack up on them while it still lasts

Actually optoman... There's a deal for FAR 25pk DVD+R, but the rebate wording is kinda scary, so don't want to order yet. At least until someone sorts out the meaning for it. But here it is:

DVD burner for under $100 does sound yummy, but when you buy a dual format burner, which format media do you buy? The cheapest I guess... :p

Gonna tell my mate at work about this, he got a DVD+RW drive free with his Dell and hasn't been able to find any cheap 4x media (not as cheap as my DVD-R) the only cheap stuff
is 2.4x and who wants to wait 25+mins for a burn?

In fact he hasn't even been able to play the Pluses on any of our players, as they all do DVD-R but only DVD+RW which are REALLY expensive.

So SleepyB - if you get a dual format drive, I'd say buy Minuses for it! Although with most of the dual format drive reviews I've seen, they have problems with Minuses, and
we don't seem to have 8x DVD-R yet.

Feedback on the 411S is mixed. Would recommend either NEC or Pioneer if you're looking for a cheap dual DVD burner, worth the extra $20 in my opinion.

In the corresponding thread over on FW there a couple links to other forums where they talk about the problems with this drive. It's unclear to me whether firmware updates will ultimately solve the problems. Anyone have a sense of this?

AAWWW man. You would have to post that review link. Out of all of the few BF deals I have seen this is the only one I saw worth waiting in line for. Not to mention the $20 coupon I have sitting here for OD.

Anyhow thanks for the link. $69 spent on trash is $$ down the drain. I will be checking it frequently over the next week or so to see if firmware release is helping. ;)

Maybe Staples will have one for similar price. I just recieved a $20 gift card from them. :)

At least you didn't jump all over him like rabid Optorite fanboys do when someone points out the poor media compatability or buggy firmware on the DD020x drives. :D

I do like Lite-On and out of the several different new dual format DVD burners with problems, I have the most faith in Lite-On for actually fixing those problems.

The latest firmware came out yesterday. According to the latest response in the link above people in forums that are using say it fixes a most of problems.

That is why I am going to keep checking the reviews. If it looks like it fixes the problems people are having I am pulling the trigger. ;)

Was debating between this and the nec, will probably go with this one because of the firmware upgrades and speed. The lite-on 411s burns cdrs at 40x whereas the nec only burns cdrs at 16x. Also in terms of the price, cant beat those 20 off 100 coupons with in store pickup.

Didnt see it on there site tho.

CDfreaks gave it the "Editors choice award"

"We feel that the drive offers so much more at a much lower cost than the competitors that it deserves a ?Best value award?, but the performance, specifications, bundle and definitively also price is so much better when we compare it to most other drives in the same generation that it actually is over qualified for the ?Best value award? and thus we give it the ?Editors choice award? instead."

Review

I've had mine for a couple of weeks now & love it,no problems,heck I have'nt even updated the firmware yet.So far I've used TDK DVD+RW's & Imation DVD+R disc's with no problems.

BB is selling this drive for $79.99 after rebates on BF, Pricematch Time!. Also heard a rumor that this drive is identical to the 8X speed, 811model which means if someone hacks the firmware, you'll have an 8X burner!!
