No I got it also. I know I was charged tax on mine, maybe that is the differance.

Edit: from Dell's order confirmation..."Dell Home Systems collects tax on orders delivered to Texas, Kentucky, Nevada, North Carolina, Tennessee, Idaho and Florida."

it's white. Dell does have a few black bezel drives if you look. As far as the case goes....look at Directron to get an idea of what type of case you'd like. Also check out www.Colorcases.com for more to compare. Then price shop around (newegg.com, computergeeks.com, heatsinkstore.com, Fry's, etc..do a search here for case, and you'll find a myriad of pre-modded cases for cheap). Audigy is the way to go for the sound card, maybe plat/ext if you need the front access ports/optical/remote. Video card depends on what you need...dual video, 64/128 mb, uber gaming, video editing, dvd playback, etc...

and since you're going for a window, don't forget rounded cables and some sort of cable management (split loom, cable wrap, tape, mesh, etc..) to make it look good!

I want to thank you for posting this deal.

$36 for a DVD-ROM shipped next is incredible.

I was torn between this drive and the toshiba/sony/pioneer/artec/asus alternatives. My main requirements are low sound while playing movies AND performance ripping CDs (I only have a 24x CDROM).

amdskip says the drive is loud and montyburns says it's quiet.

According to reviews I read while researching the drive they both are right. At full speed and when initialy reading CDs the drive can be loud. While playing movies at 1x the drive is really silent.

Here's what www.storagereview.com had to say:

Though most DVD-ROM drives spin up to full spindle speeds when playing DVD-Videos (reading data intermittently off of the disc), the Lite-On LTD163 spins at very low RPMs (1X?) during movie playback. This offers nearly silent operation in comparison to the competition while playing DVD movies. For those looking for a quiet DVD player for their computers, this is the drive! An ancillary benefit- the drive remains very cool during movie playback. After 30 minutes of movie play it remains room temperature. Kudos to Lite-On for implementing this!
...

Overall, we are very impressed with Lite-On's latest DVD-ROM drive. It shatters DVD-ROM barriers in transfer rates and DAE speed while providing quiet operation during movie playback.

Course you can't believe everything you read! Thanks to this deal I should know in a day or two if this is a good drive for me....

I've used several of the drives at the top of the CDSpeed2000 ratings (Asus, Afreey, AOpen, etc.), and the Lite-On 16X DVD is my favorite. It reads scratched discs well, and it seems to create images quickly with CloneCD. This is arguably the best CD/DVD reader on the market. I think that it is also noticeably more quiet than some other high-speed competitors (the Asus CD-ROM comes to mind).

Nope, not true. The link was always stated that. I posted this deal a month ago and it stated the same thing then. I bought three drives and they are not refurbs.

Ordered yesterday at 2:30 and just got it. Sweet - Overnight rocks -

Also, my order still shows "In Production" heh ---- Mine is factory sealed and doesn't show any signs of being refurbished ---- It still could be, but they dress it up nicely ----

Click on the link above and look at the URL in your address box. It's the last word in the URL.

That's a common part of the URL for EVERY item in accessories on their site. It's where they can flag the item if it is a refurb (note that it simply says REFURB= with no value). This is not a refurb.

Got mine yesterday.

Yes the drive is a little loud when reading at 48x (don't use fragile disc the instructions say). Have yet to explore slowing it down.

Noise level is very quiet when watching movies. I can hear it but only if the sound is off and it is not enough to bother me.

So far movies have played flawlessly. My first time watching movies on a computer and it is fun to play with the slow motion and zoom in movies like the matrix.

Also ships with the latest version of Power DVD XP 4.0 that retails for $49.95. Between that and the free shipping I figure I saved $60 over a a barebones-OEM drive.

Bonus: The 163D can be made region free without flashing. Just run a utility to turn on and off RPC-2 copy protection (have not tried it yet as I have no DVDs that need it).
