Lite-on burns coasters non-stop

I am having a little too much trouble with the new Lite-On 40x.

I burnt 4 vcd's using nero, and I had about 15 coasters. I have to reduce the speed to 4x for the burn to finish successfully.

I know, my 24x crapusa blanks may not be the best, but failing at 8x? Surely it can't be solely the blanks' fault.

Any diagnosing ideas?

is the drive using dma?
Yep, lots of DMA for everyone.

Edit: I remember seeing a tool that would test the actual max speed of CD-R blanks. I can't seem to find it right now, does anyone know of such a proggie?

UPDATE: I have been trying to use CD SPEED to diagnose the issues. When I try to burn a data disc, it fails at random locations with this error :" NO ADDITIONAL SENSE INFORMATION"

What firmware is on your CD-writer. Lite On released a new one a couple of weeks ago that improved media compatibility.

Damn, I just remembered: the drive is actually a TDK-branded Lite-on. Does anyone know if I can flash Lite-on firmware on these, or do I have to wait for TDK to produce one?

You will be able to use Lite-On firmware for your TDK burner. You'll need to do the following:

1) Head to the CDFreaks Web site: CDFreaks
2) Look for the utility: mtkflash (I had problems with version 1.55, so use 1.4x if you experience any problems)
3) Find the appropriate firmware for your model of Lite-On drive (again, more links to firmware can be found in the CDFreaks forum under the "Lite-On" section.
4) When using Mtkflash, ensure you have captured a current copy of your firmware - in the event you ever need to go back to it (e.g. - warranty purposes on your drive.) 😉
5) Follow the procedures: the capture and flash procedure is pretty well documented - and you run them off of a boot diskette.

Best of luck! 🙂

Oh, one more thing. How is your drive configured?? Is it the primary drive on your second controller?? This could be part of the problem. If you're running it as a slave device on the primary channel, you might consider making it the master device on the secondary channel.

For what its worth at vcdhelp.com they always say burn at 4x max therer must be a reason. Check out their forum and see what they say, I doubt it the burner.

Does it fail when doing a music cd?? a data cd?? Isolate the problem. I have made coasters the same way at 8x.

Good luck!!

I gots it as a secondary master.

Only fails on the Lead Data blanks. Samsung ones are fine. Haven't tried much else yet on this drive.

Cool, thanks for the info. I've got a stack of Imation blanks my Lite-On won't burn.
