DVD Xcopy Platinum is a hot steaming pile of horse dung.
321 Studios had their fifteen minutes of fame with the original DVD Xcopy, since it was a very early and reasonably reliable "one click" DVD copy solution. But today, their product line stacks up like this;
Offers no compression. Can perform 1:1 copies of DVD-5 discs, but DVD Decrypter is at least as good at this, and is freeware. It's only practical use now is to perform copies of DVD-9s split over two DVD-5 discs. This can be helpful for very long titles such as
Titanic or
Gangs of New York, where compression would result in poor quality.
Offers automatic compression to fit DVD-9 features onto DVD-5 blanks. Very simple but lousy feature set. For example, you must choose either Dolby Surround soundtracks or DTS. You cannot copy both, which is frustrating if you have a decent home theater setup but also a simple DVD player setup or two. Easy to use but wholly outclassed by either Pinnacle's
Instant Copy or freeware
DVD Shrink.
Nothing more than a carrot that was dangled in front of Xcopy customers in a bizarre effort to get them to buy direct from the publisher and bypass the distribution chain. Even if you had already purchased Xcopy from some other vendor, you had to pay 321 Studios the difference in cost (if any) between what you paid and full retail, so you would qualify for the "free upgrade to Platinum!". In an effort to satisfy an increasingly angry and resentful user base (just check out the Xcopy support forums) 321 Studios rushed a buggy, half-finished Platinum to market which didn't even implement the advanced features that were anticipated.
Save your money. There is nothing these products can do that a free program can't do at least as well.
