Lite-On 24X: Burns REALLY Slow EDIT:Fixed

Can anyone help me out here? In december I got one of the Lite-On 24X CD Burners, based on recommendations of people here. Problem is, it takes 10-15 minutes to burn a 74 minute CD, even though it says its burning at 24X. Relevant stats:

Memorex 80 Min media, never heard anything bad about it
Drive is set as the master, DVD drive as slave (since I always burn to HD image first, I didn't want HD and burner to be on same IDE bus)
NERO 5.5, with 256 MB set as cache and 80 MB RAM buffer
Windows 2K, SP2 on an Athlon 1.4 system with 512 MB DDR RAM and 7200 RPM IBM HD
Never did a firmware update (would they really have shipped a drive with firmware that only let it burn at 6X?)

Anyone else encounter this problem or know a way to fix it?

Thanks

While your burning does the drive's status light change from orange to red and back again? If its doing this that means BurnProof is kicking in and that will slow down a burn. I had this same problem with my LiteON 16x, Win2k by default didn't enable DMA for the drive. Go into Device manager and make sure DMA is enabled for the IDE channel you have your drive on.

Just to check the obvious....

Are the CD's 24X approved? i.e. are they capable of being burned at 24x

Just checkin 🙂

Steve,

That was it. The device defaulted to PIO for some reason. Changed it, CD took 3:08 to burn.

Thanks!
