I ordered the DVD Drive on Wednesday and it should be here by Monday according to the UPS tracking info. It's coming from their warehouse in GA. I also ordered SB audigy card on Wednesday and that got to me yesterday. That came from Dell's Orlando warehouse. I also have something else coming from Dell's CA warehouse that won't be here for like 1 week.

I got my drive today. I can also hear something inside the drive when I move it around. It kind of sounds like a loose spring or something. I was thinking the drive was broken or something, but I went ahead and installed it anyway. It seems to work fine though.

I ran a few tests with CDSpeed, everything looks good except for my burst Rate Test. I'm only getting 2MB / s. Meanwhile, my Plextor 24/10/40 get's about 18MB / s. That's a pretty huge difference. Can anyone test theirs and let me know what they get?

anyone notice when you open up the drive, that it sort of slows down.. but when you close it, it's alright?

maybe it's just me, or cuz of the way i had it setup lying bare on the shipping box it came in with the case open to test it.. too lazy to install it :p

I hear the same loose "something" in my drive as well when I move it slowly in my hand.

Doesn't sound like a broken loose part but maybe some sort of balancer or adjuster/tensioner?

Dunno. But I sure can't wait to install it~! :D

I recieved my LiteOn DVD ROM yesterday. It does make a noise, kinda grainy like, when you tilt the front of the drive upwards or downwards.

Anyways I installed it and noticed the operating noise of the drive was quieter than the LiteOn 16X10X40X burner I had installed next to it. The DVD tray loader opened and closed quieter. The drive makes the grainy noise when you first put in a pressed dvd rom and then spins up making a small high pitched noise. It is noticable but not annoying. It lasts about 10 seconds then silences. Putting in a pressed audio CD in the LiteOn burner, the drive spins up for about 10 seconds and then silences. There was none of that initial grainy sound and it made a high pitch noice too. It was probably 1.5x as loud as the DVD drive in spinning up and more noticable than the DVD drive. So overall I was happy with sound levels as I have thought it is normal for CDROMS/DVDROMS to have an initial spinup to buffer data and stuff.

Ok I also did some DAE testing with a regular audio CD on both the LiteOn burner and DVD drive. The fastest I got with the burner was around 14x. The fastest I could get with the DVD drive was only 6x. I was kinda dissapointed as I thought this DVD drive had this "Smart X" technology for faster DAE. Maybe it applies to ripping DVD's but I didn't try any of that yet. As for comparison to my old BTC 44X CD drive ripped audio CD's at about.. ARG!! my audiograbber just started asking me for a serial number, it was working about 4 hours ago and previously for a couple of months. I don't have the serial number on hand so I can't test but if I remember right, it was faster than the DVD's 6x, probably at around 8x. Anyways I'll retest tomorrow when I have time to fix audiograbber. Anyone know why the DVD drive would be slower in ripping digital audio? It might be that I have the DVD drive set up as a slave as the burner as a master. Tomorrow I'll switch them and retest then post results here. For now I'm off to bed.

I hear the loose "springy" sound also when I shake the drive, but I installed it and it works fine. Also my tray does slow down when opening the tray but not when closing it. I thought my drive was defective at first but I guess its not since everyone has the same problem. Shipping from Dell was quick but the packaging was poor (IMHO).

Technogeek,

I ordered around the same time you did but apparently screwed up my CC#, since mine showed canceled as well, with no explanation on the web page. I reordered and saved about $5 or so under the previous price.

If you have your customer and order numbers handy, call 1-800-915-3355 and choose 4, followed by 2, then enter your numbers as instructed. If they really did ship, as they seem to have told you at one point, this will get you a tracking number.

Can anyone that ordered this drive, run CDSpeed in Nero and tell me what they get for the Interface Burst Rate test? I'm only getting 1-2MB/s. Meanwhile my Plextor 24/10/40 scores 16MB/s. I'd like to know if this is typical of the Lite-On or if mine is just defective.

<< what's the best way to make sure the dvd drive is working properly? just watching a dvd movie and making sure it can read a data disc?

just like my old 4x Toshiba DVD drive (works great btw), after unpacking it, when i move the drive around slowly (Very slowly might i add) i can hear something (resistor??) moving around.. like i said before, my old toshiba did that when i first got it but never got any problems with it.. should i be worrying about this?

anyone else have this slight problem?
>>

Glad to hear someone else noticed this and it's not just my drive. So far mine seems fine. But is playing Region 1 discs much better than from other regions. Sadly, i don't have many discs from other regions to verify whether it may be just those discs or if the patch isn't 100% perfect.

Other details that hopefully help you guys out:

*I ordered on the 30th and received it Feb 1 (looks like there is a warehouse in maryland and I live in VA).
*mine has a manufacturer's date of Jan/2002
*I have applied the firmware patch that has been mentioned on page 3 and the drive now plays discs from all regions - tested on a region 2 disc of Cemetery Man. If you're using a program like WinDVD to watch your movies, might I recommend DVD Region Killer - this program forces programs like WinDVD to play movies from all regions (on drives that support all regions)

I live in Fairfax, VA and I ordered through the Small Business section. Here are some phone numbers that might help, they're on the order acknowledgement letter that I just got in the mail today:

Sales: 877-284-3355
Customer Service: 800-456-3355

HoosierDade, you can buy an upgrade for windows media player (xp) that will let you play dvd's for $15.

Wolfram, Dell may be a well known company, but their customer service leaves a little to be desired at times. Not that they are real bad, but they certainly don't live up to the reputation a lot of the time either.

thanks for the deal....always wanted a dvd-rom...finally broke down. They gave me an estimated ship date of: "On or before Mar 14, 2002"....do they generally ship faster than that though? i hope so...that's more than half a month away!

Can't believe sb. is still waiting this DVD rom, while most of us are using it for long time. It's pretty quiet while playing DVDs.
