got the dvd drive on the 21st.... i was plannin on postin this but my dsl died for 2 days! damn speakeasy.net isn't being as consistent as i hoped it would be.
anyways, seems like a good deal for me with the 10% off, performance-wise the lite-on is great, altho i heard it may get loud when accessing the outer portions of the disc... still got it tho, should ship on the 25th :D

ARGH! Out of stock and delayed; they say it's going to ship on the 25th of thos month, but i'm sure it'll get pushed back to next year or something. gawd i hate those friggin monkeys! can't they learn something from newegg and get a real time inventory tracking system?

Mine arrived today. I haven't installed it yet. I probably will wait until this weekend to install it. No drivers are necessary. The instructions basically say "turn off PC and unplug power; mount it in your drive bay; set the jumper to master or slave as appropriate; connect IDE cable; connect sound cable; connect power cable; close PC and fire it up" (okay, so I paraphrased a bit). It comes with PowerDVD on CD and an audio cable. It does not come with an IDE cable. I read somewhere that it comes region locked. The instructions say you can reset the region 5 times "and may have this 5 times resetting capability re-established by an authorized service center an additional 4 times after purchase." Or, you can see if there are any utilities or firmware on the web that will remove the region lock. I take no responsibility if you try to modify the firmware. As I said, I haven't even installed mine yet so I have no idea whether that works.

I disagree. I have a PII-300Mhz that plays DVD's just fine on an old 4MB ATI video card. However, whenever I set the DVD drive to slave instead of master on its own channel, the playback becomes unwatchable, just as ShizNitz described.

Try putting the DVD as a Master on its own IDE channel (temporarily remove the CDRW or put it as slave to your hard drive) and see what happens. >>



I'll try that this evening. However, if it does work, am I limited in that I can either have a CD-ROM/CD-RW or a DVD-ROM but not both? Thanks for your input.

Note: Everything that I've read about DVD drives says that my processor speed, memory, and video card are MORE than enough to be able to play DVDs. I would upgrade but I'm not as technically proficient as most everybody else on this board and I've never built my own system (i.e. I have problems hooking up a DVD drive). >>




It would be a good idea to enable DMA for the DVD drive. My bro has a p3 1ghz that wouldn't play dvds correctly until dma was enabled. Powerdvd includes a utility to do so.

I think the free shipping in the Business site ended yesterday. Sorry. It comes and goes periodically. Check back in a few days and see if they bring it back.

My order just confirmed in the last ten minutes or so. Just under $55 with tax and shipping. I considered adding an item or two I need for the system I am building to get the free shipping for orders over $100, but their prices on floppy drives and modems were so much higher than Newegg that it would not have been worth the $4.50 I would save.
