i just bought one of these from Dell. I upgraded from a Toshiba 12x. Is it me or is this drive loud when it seeks. Once a CD or DVD gets going it goes back to a being quiet drive. Also, before I put in the drive, something inside would move around pretty easily. I think it was the lens but i'm not sure.

DVD's and CD's play flawlessly. The noise is kinda getting to me. It really does seek pretty loud.

Is something actually wrong with my lite-on? or was i just spoiled from my toshiba 12x.

Dell has a really good return service. so returning it won't be a problem
 
It's not a problem. The Lite-On 16x is pretty much known to be loud. You might've gotten an old revision drive, I heard the newer ones are quieter, but I cannot confirm on this. When is your drive made?
 
well i have a lite on from dell and its not loud. but you can definately hear the seek. it sounds like a laser jet 🙂 i dont mind it. but i am not sure how quiet was your toshiba was comparin to the lite on...
 
One of the issues with my Lite-on DVD that is most annoying to me is that it seems to reinitialize the cd directory (different sound than just spinning up, almost like a hiss) when I first do a lookup that might choose it. Like pulling an address bar down or going to my computer. There is also the lag while it waits for it to pick up the disk and then spin it up. It doesn't do this with all disks either. I was having to pull the disk out when I was done using it because it was really annoying me. The normal spin up is quiet compared to my old Creative 52X.

Actually, its sounds like the drive starts off at full speed and the clamping force is inadequate to keep the disk from spinning in the clamp, so its like a plastic on plastic until the disk catches up.
 
Quickfingerz. The issues you mentioned are found in most, if not all, these 16x liteon drives. I have 2 and they work flawlessly even with the "loose spring" noise and the louder spinup and the slow eject tray problem.
 
My lite-on also has has what sounds liek a loose spring that moves around inside of it. If you turn it over or shake it mildly you can hear a spring-like noise moving around. It's also extremely loud when spinning up.
 
Wierd, I just got a lite on 16x dvd rom from newegg about a week ago. It seems pretty much silent to me. I had heard it was going to be pretty loud, I guess I just lucked out.
 
I received mine on Monday but not yet installed it - the only reference I have is my Delta 12x DVD ROM which is perfect.

I've read so many negative reviews about this Delta DVD ROM as well, but it has no problems at all 🙂

I'll get it installed and report back.
 
The last time I checked...for all that extra noise you get over a toshiba, you also get much faster dae ripper, cd reader, and dvd ripper...review at www.storagereview.com if I remember correctly show the liteon pretty much better then the toshiba in about everything....

I'll take performance over sound....maybe it the old amd tbird owner in me...

Storagereview never reviewed Toshiba's newest SD-M1612. In fact, I wouldnt even recommend Storagereview for DVD-ROM reviews. Check CDRLabs, they have a much better collection of DVD-ROM reviews, and they have better testing methodologies. The fact is, the Lite-On is a *slightly* better CD-ROM reader, Toshiba is the superior CD-RW disc reader, but Lite-On has better DAE. For DVD performance they're really not that much different, except Toshiba locks their playback speed to 2-4x(you only need 1x to playback). And if you're into copying CDs and defeating copy-protection, you've got to have the Toshiba. Overall I like the Toshiba solution better, it only has one weakness, Lite-On has quite a few.
