Lite-On 16x DVD - Problem (?)

I'm not sure whether this is a problem, but I picked up one of the new Lite-On 16X DVD's from Dell. Installation was a snap, but there's one problem. PowerDVD has stopped working, even when I install the version which was included with the DVD drive.

The problem is that Power DVD will start to load, then I will see no startup splash screen. If I go into the task manager, however, I find that it is eating up 100% of my CPU cycle time.

Furthermore, the Lite-On sounds like a jet engine when it's spinning up. First I get a second or two of some "scratching" type-sound as it starts to spin up (no damage to actual CD upon inspection), then the familiar spinning hum. I highly doubt this is classic of an optical drive, but who knows...?

Any suggestions? Otherwise, the drive seems to work fine and once I manage to get the DVD's loaded (immense lag time) they seem to work just fine.

I'd check your busmastering drivers... if its via then update the 4in1's, if its intel, update from their website...

Also, try swapping the DMA value of your DVD drive, often times this can help

I also Just Installed this DVD and yes I wondered the same thing about the sound so I emailed Lite-on and because of the auto balancing and other features they say these sounds are normal. I don't know if I will be able to get used to it because my old drive was so quiet.

Thanks for all the input. I reset my DVD as the master and set the CD-RW as the slave and everything worked out. It's a great drive, and I'm glad I'm not the only one with those eerie-sounding sounds coming out of it. 🙂

Thanks for the assistance.
