It does indicate that it's an OEM drive, but it doesn't say anything about it being refurbished.

the suprising thing is that a Lite On drive (which i haven't heard much good about) is basically the fastest dvd drive out there...

but then again, it's not upgradeable to region-free...

are the pioneer and toshiba drives the only drives out there that can be made region-free?
edit: dumb question, a lot of drives can be made region-free.

saw this on CloneCD's website:

<< We recommend TOSHIBA DVD-ROMs for reading. >>

so that's what i'm going for then.

I have a toshiba 1502....how would I make it region free? Is it just a firmware flash?

but the toshiba's are slow when it comes to data extraction (audio and data). And not everyone needs clone cd compatability.

i'm considering this drive for a friend.
he only needs it to watch dvds occasionally, use other dvd "programs" rarely, and use regular cds.
would the lite-on 12x (for $10 less at spartan than the 16x one) be a better choice? or what would be?

thanks..

I've bought a fair amount from GGC,over 6 grand-their prices for scsi hard drives is hard to beat. Never had a single prob. Their shipping prices are a little high and since I'm on the right coast ground is waaaaaaaaaay to slow.
