is there a hacked firmware available for this dvd burner that will allow it to rip dvd's to hdd faster, rather than the limited speed that they all come with?

Yes, it comes with Nero Express

Newegg always has a DVD burner on promotion with free shipping. I got the Samsung with Lightscribe for $30.99 w/shipping a few weeks ago. The month before that, I got a Lite-On with Lightscribe Retail package for a 4 bucks more. Just watch the deals on the home page (or subscribe to their RSS feed) and eventually the model you want will be on promotion.
