Lite-On 16X DVD±RW w/ LightScribe for $29.99 at Tiger

LOL! How about that!

And what's funny is it'll probably ship from Newegg (my last ChiefValue order shipped from Newegg in Cali.)

are these burners any good? I need a good one capable of backing up some of my educational CDs protected by SafeDisc 2.8

I can't speak for this particular model, but all of my opticals (except for one MSI, which has been a PITA) are Lite-On and I've had no problems.

My last gig, we used either Lite-On or AOpen (depending on who we were buying from 50/50) and I never had an optical drive RMA.

Newegg has this for about the same price. Just bought two of them for $28 each, no trouble so far. The price has gone up a little since then at NewEgg:
If you are patient, the DVD burner of your choice will eventually show up at NewEgg as a daily deal with free shipping. I bought the Lite-on w/Lightscribe (Retail box)for $33 with free shipping a couple of months ago then the Samsung w/Lightscribe (OEM) and free shipping for $30 last month.

Yup, Athena is right about that. Just gotta look out and hop on it when it happens. Of course, I'm the king of paying $2.99 for Rush orders.... hey what's 3 bucks when its actually on my doorstep at noon the next day on the east coast?

That said, the Tiger deal posted is still a good deal. Both faceplates is nice. And this one is "half-height." The samsung I just bought is 1/2 height, and it definitely makes for a much more comfortable fit in my SFF rig.
