Listened to AMD's webcast today

For the first time in a long time, I'm actually excited to see what AMD has come up with on that custom ARM core of theirs.

From the Q&A, it seems that this is a "big" ARM core aimed at networking/servers/semi-custom, while client ARM solutions are likely to use ARM-designed IP.

Interesting move on AMD's part...

My guess is that they're big, Broadcom "Vulcan"-like cores.

I figured it was only a matter of time for AMD to get an ARM "Architecture license".

The "Project SkyBridge" family will feature full SoC integration, AMD Graphics Core Next technology, HSA, and AMD Secure Technology via a dedicated Platform Security Processor (PSP).

"K12" - A new high-performance, low-power ARM-based core that takes deep advantage of AMD's ARM architectural license, extensive 64-bit design expertise, and a core development team led by Chief CPU Architect Jim Keller. The first products based on "K12" are planned for introduction in 2016.

Long shot suggestion here but you should try emailing him or contacting him in some way with your question. I know we all expect these guys to be out of reach for the common layperson, but I have had surprising success in cold-contacting high profile people in the past. Give it shot, you got nothing to lose and everything to gain.

Well, according to Anand:

While at Apple, Keller worked on the design teams for the A4 and A5 SoCs. He was also in charge of defining the specifications of two MacBook Air generations.

I find it very interesting that this is a man who obviously knows intimate detail about Apple's roadmap, and he's predicting an industry wide move away from x86...
