1. Marathon - truly groundbreaking and unforgettable. Too bad it's being a Mac game relegated it to obscurity.
2. Wolf3D - for starting it all
3. Duke3D - because you could shoot ANYTHING
4. Quake 2 - for revolutionizing multiplayer gaming.
5. Unreal Tournament - for the most all-out gaming fun at the time.

1) doom (set the bar)
2) quake (since it gave us online multiplay)
3) half-life (have spent more time playing mods of this game than probably any other except maybe quake)
4) duke3d (this game was so much damn fun on a LAN)
5) wolf3d

1. Doom2 - brought us the glorious world of multiplayer deathmatch and coop
2. Quake - brought us addicting, awesome internet play
3. Tribes - brought us vehicular combat and large scale multiplayer team play
4. Half-Life - made modding what it is today and helped support gaming communities and constant improvements
5. BF1942 - made vehicles essential and took massive multiplayer gaming to the next level

Can't wait to see what comes next.

wow.. I can't believe i forgot about Marathon :) Come to think of it, that game was light years ahead of Doom when it came out (at around the same time as the original Doom).

continueing on with the list:
1. Marathon
2. Doom II
3. CS
4. UT
5. a cross between Quake 3 and Duke Nukem 3d

When Quake came out, I didn't have internet access. I remember trying to put together a dial-up game with my friend across the street and it was slow and laggy.

By the time I got to college, QII was where it was at, and it seemed to me that it was easier to find/join a game, and that it was much better and faster to play, even over dialup.

Maybe it's just my (mis)perception since I had little experience with multiplayer QI.
