Tough call, but probably Quake.

Not so much for the single player game which I don't recall ever completing, but the internet play and mods (CTF, Team Arena, etc.) were incredible.

UO was also pretty fun back in the day. It was truly a world in chaos before the expansions came out.

Colonial Conquest via telnet in 92. That shiz was cutting edge online multiplayer in 92

Just me, or did anyone geek out to the max when you found out you could strap a C4 type explosive to a jeep in BF1942; watch someone drive it or bail at the last minute and detonate it in the opponents face?

UT '99, first one I ever bought, after I finally had a PC capable of running it (or any other 3D game, for that matter).

Ultima Online, Baldur's gate, Deus Ex, Fallout, Gothic, Age of Empires. And many about a hundred others.

I need to go and play Baldur's gate. I have it as part of the abandonware I've collected. Anyone know how it works under DosBox?

Plays smoothly.

Sweet, DosBox is amazing, plays just about everything, even some really old abadonware stuff you wouldn't expect it to.

I remember trying to get into BG or BG II a long time back and finding it very difficult. I know it's know for it's difficulty. That was quite a long time back though and I'm MUCH more patient and a better gamer now so it's time I gave it another shot!

Cosmo's Cosmic Adventure
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cosmo's_Cosmic_Adventure

Though I played long after its release (in about 1999 I'd guess?). While not the first video game I played, its nostalgic for me because I used to play it with my dad.

Other than that the list is:
Call to Power 2
I loved this game, more so than Civ 2 (and apparently Civ 3 and 5 since I play CtP2 still)

Star Wars Dark Forces/Jedi Knight/Jedi Knight 2
Similar to Cosmo's, dad and I frittered away some serious hours playing those. Still an awesome time

And, if I could play, I would have to mention an Indy MMO called Roma Victor.
While the game itself was not polished and a real grind sometimes, I met some of the best people I've ever gamed with on there, and had a great time with them. I'm still in contact with most of my guild from that too.

I picked this up for about 10 bucks the other day. Should I install this and play me some of it?

Yes, but give yourself time to get used to the dated graphics. It took me hours to adjust to them back in the early 2000s.

But it puts so many modern games to shame.

Dated graphics are not a problem for me. You are talking to an 8 bit vintage game lover. I also love to collect old school abandonware. Only problem graphics wise is that I have a 30" monitor so the graphics will look even worse than normal, lol.

Quest for Glory 1-3
Diablo 1
Starcraft 1

The soundtrack of the two blizzard games is so beautiful. When I hear it I immediately picture myself back in the 90s playing those games.
