I'm looking to expand my musical taste, and was wondering if anyone could point me out to some good artists/song titles in the following categories.

opera/classical
jazz/blues
oldies/
ambient/theme/new age
hardcore( such as RATM)

I'm also looking for absolutely wierd but cool music, so mention anything that is wierd and different, that no one appreciates or knows about.

please no hip-hop/pop/electronica/raggae, as thats not what im looking into.

thanks, i appreciate it!

loathe ambient, new age, and whatever hardcore 'ratm' represents. but as for oldies,
slow bluesy tunes, then we can go way back to robert johnson (1930s). argueably the
greatest jazz guitarist was django reinhardt (peaked 1934-46), a gypsy, who recorded
little but just enough to demonstrate his unequaled mastery of the instrument. django
is not easy to locate.

For classical I would try the CD titled Alina by the composer Avro Part, the music on this CD is extremely simple, but that simplicity makes it quite different.

Also if your interested in celtic/new age then I would highly recommend any CD by Loreena Mckennitt.

Don't know about weird and not known, but if you like different try "Pink Floyd." They are different, though they are well known. Oh, and The Crash Test Dummies are really great, and they are a little less known.

I generally prefere Classic Rock, from late 60's early-to-mid 70's.

My Favorite Artist include, though not limited to:

Jackson Browne
Pink Floyd
Rolling Stones
Neil Young

RATM is hardcore?!?! WTF? That's way off. Madball, Sick Of It All, and Integrity are hardcore. RATM is most certainly NOT.

Thank for saying it for me Napalm. I got real pissed when I read that. Even though Zak de la Nutsack was in Inside Out, which was a pretty hardcore band.

For weird cool music try the following:

Pop Will Eat Itself (click sig)
The Orb (early stuff)
Bently Rythm Ace
Zen Cowboys
Art of Noise - The Seduction of Claude DeBussy
The KLF - The Chill Out album
Red Snapper - Kind of a jazz/dance sound.

I'd say RATM is hard rock, sort of rap metal (although quite a bit better than those twits Limp Bizkit).
