In answer to jbWHO :

The slot which existed a bit before PCI and which was seen as an extension to ISA was the VLB (VESA LOCAL BUS).
It was more popular in the 486 motherboards than on the Pentium ones.

VLB had a rather short life as the PCI chipset improved and VLB lost its appeal.
