List a reason IT/IS is a better job than retail.

Like many others, I cut my teeth in retail jobs before moving on to IS. It's so nice not to have to deal with customers like this anymore. I'll take people who complain that a computer won't boot when they forget to eject a floppy any day.

:)

Anyone else with me on this one?

I went from Staples, to the IT department in a large software firm, to a local computer repair shop all in a 4 month period. I didn't hate Staples, but the other employees always acted "snobbish". I enjoyed retail for the year or so I was there, but I had piss poor managers that looked down on the employee if a customer complained. No back up at all from them.

My boss now will tell off a customer in a heartbeat and back you up 100% (that is if the customer is really being stupid, and the problem is not the employees fault). It makes life much easier.

Without retail though, I would not have made the contacts I did. I got tons of side work from it, and actually met my current boss that way. He made me an offer I couldn't refuse and I've been loving it ever since.

I'm sure you're exaggerating. A good boss would politely explain to the customer that they have missunderstood, not tell them off. Your salary is paid by customers. If you have no customers, you have no job.

Hmm let's see. I'm getting paid a lot right now and just scanned ebay for a new pair of speakers.

Contrast that with selling crap to somebody :D

Hmmm... I'm sitting here in my office reading ATOT on 2-21" Viewsonic monitors drinking free Mt. Dew and getting paid more than any job I've had before... Yep, glad I'm not in retail! :)
