Liquor you buy at duty free. Can you open it on the plane?

When you pass through security at an airport and get to the duty free shops you can of course buy liquor. Thing is, do they allow you to open it on the plane?

Once upon a time, no problem. Nowadays? I'm not sure, but I doubt it.

People do it all the time on Russian airlines, especially charters going to vacation places. They get so loaded, many need help exiting the plane.

Wait until cruising altitude, open the bottle, guzzle it all down. It's not like they can kick you out of the plane at that juncture.

No, but they CAN divert to the closest airport...then kick him out. (and perhaps charge him with some federal crime or another...after all, he IS a terrerst Canuckistanian.)

Of course you can - why wouldn't you be able to? It's your liquor that you bought, and drinking isn't illegal AFAIK.

I was just about to buy a bottle when the duty free clerk asked if this was a connecting flight which it is. Can't really bring it unless I drink the whole bottle on the plane because of the stupid only 100ml of fluid rule. When we pass back throug security at the other end, if we do, they will confiscate it. Will have to buy it on the Houston Belize leg. Or just order some on the plane. :hmm:

It only becomes a problem if you are a belligerent tard who can't hold his liquor.

Well one reason that comes immediately to mind is cause they sell liquor and the airline is a business. Restaurants don't like it when you bring your own food and drink for example.

Carrying Alcohol In Your Checked Baggage

Travelers may now carry through security checkpoints travel-size toiletries (3 ounces or less) that fit comfortably in ONE, QUART-SIZE, clear plastic, zip-top bag. Learn More
Wine, shown here, and other beverages with less than 24% alcohol content are not subject to hazardous materials regulations.

With the exception of medications, any amount of liquid including alcohol greater than three ounces must be packed in your checked baggage.

Liquids, including alcohol purchased after clearing the security checkpoint are permitted aboard aircraft.

Carrying Alcohol In Your Checked Baggage

Please note, you can’t take alcoholic beverages with more than 70% alcohol content (140 proof), including 95% grain alcohol and 150 proof rum, in your checked luggage.

You may take up to five liters of alcohol with alcohol content between 24% and 70% per person as checked luggage if it’s packaged in a sealable bottle or flask.

Alcoholic beverages with less than 24% alcohol content are not subject to hazardous materials regulations.

So...if you buy a bottle in the duty-free shop and open it on the plane, you're OK...as long as you don't try to take it onto the next plane once it's opened...Since the airlines make so much money by selling liquor, I'll be surprised if they permit you to open your own nowadays. It used to be "frowned upon," but as long as it was done discretely, no one usually said anything...but in today's greater security...<shrug>
For clarification...that bottle you buy in the duty free shop is fine on the first leg...but will be confiscated on the second leg of your trip. The rules are still very retarded.

It gets even crazier than this. I once flew through Amsterdam for work, going to Stockholm first, and then to London later. I was checking out a duty free shop, and wanted to buy something, when the store clerk asked me where I was going. I told him - Stockholm. He said: well, if you are going to Stockholm, you can only purchase on _this_ side of the store. _That_ side is only for people going to UK.

Me: well, I'll be in UK in 3 days.
He: sorry, sir, I could only allow you to do that if you were going to end up in UK in 24 hours.
Me: :hmm: :\

lol. So... they wouldn't allow you to purchase items they had for sale clearly on display simply because of your destination? Fail. What if you had just made up a different destination? Oh wait no they check your boarding pass at those stores. Fail again.

Usually alcohol on international flights is free, so get tanked off of that.

Not so much any more - most American airlines now charge for alcoholic drinks even on international flights in economy. But, if you fly something a little more upscale than Delta/United/American, yes, drinks are still free. For example, on Virgin Atlantic.
