Lionel trains ... transformer question

I need to get two transformers. But the CW-80s cost about $100.

Way to much money for my budget. I don't need alot of wattage, but the prices are ridiculous to say the least. So, what can I do? EBay? Train Show?

Are there any non-Lionel brands I should consider?

You should spend the money on the better components instead of taking chances with build quality on ebay. Everyone knows this.

What about buying a Lionel transformer on ebay? Not a knock-off but a real one?

Pardon my newb question but is aside from connectors is a lionel transformer any different that one you would use with LGB?

came expecting a thread about the old Transformers HO-Scale TrainSet.

Leaving disappointed :'(

guyver,

I had that exact same trai nset as a kid! I think it is still at home. It inda sucked though. Blanace of the cars was horrible and they often fell over on their sides as they went around curves.

You can always make your own if you want to go the cheap route and actually come out with a better product.

Add a standard 120vac light dimmer between the wall and transformer to do the speed/voltage control.

Get creative !

That's not a bad idea. Key note though .... a fan control switch is needed. Light dimmers don't act as transformers. They turn the power on/off in cycles. The higher hte setting, the more tiem that 120 volts is passed through.

Fan controls actually change the voltage.

I'm going to a rtain show this weekend. I will be bringing alot of cash in hopes of finding a working used unit.

Good point. I was trying to think of something easy to get that would control the output in a linear way like a throttle.
