ANKARA, Turkey — A Turkish zoo says a tiger severed a lion's jugular vein when it stuck its paw through a narrow gap in a door dividing their cages.

The zoo in the Turkish capital of Ankara issued a statement Monday to deny media reports that the tiger bent iron bars to attack the lion and tear it into pieces in the attack on Sept. 4.

It said the tiger had squeezed it's front leg through the door, and in a single stroke left the lion dying in a pool of blood.

It was not clear why the death of one of the three lions in the zoo was publicized so late.

Six tigers remain in an enclosure at the zoo, which insists that it is safe for visitors.

That's too bad. I'd love to see pictures of the back area, 'cause I'm not sure what the fuck the staff is doing not having a buffered zone between enclosures, or having any kind of gap large enough for a full paw to stick through. That's just bad animal husbandry.

Let's say the fight took place in an arena. Who would win? I think a male lion would beat all others. I'm not sure about tigers vs female lions though.

A large male siberian tiger would have even a couple hundred pounds on a large male lion. My bet goes to the tiger.

Yeah, I think a large male tiger would dominate pretty much anything short of a hippo. The only hope for lions is that they usually function as a pride, so it seems like unlikely that lion vs. tiger would actually be a 1 on 1 affair.

Honestly, it's hard to say. Powerful paws, claws and ferocity in a polar bear. Pound for pound tigers are probably stronger than a polar bear, but outsized by several hundred pounds. If they manage to get to the neck in any way though, it's probably over for the bear.

edit: But then their bites might just be filled with fur, skin and fat, and nothing vital. My bet ultimately goes to the bear.

Go to Youtube and watch some lion vs tiger videos. The comments there are some of the most vitriolic non-sense ever posted on the intertubes.

no opposable thumbs makes it hard for cats grasp a spear or gun, fail

also, the largest Kodiak or Polar bears would rape the largest of tigers.
