If I have two machines that are made of identical components. (Under Linux) Can the hardrive from one be switched to the other in case of a breakdown? is this possible?
Secondly has anyone used the promise controllers and are they reliable and not a pain. I have heard some people alluding, that they have been have harddrive failures due to this card.
I can buy 4 mother boards with on board promise raid for the same money as a stand alone raid card. (of good quality)
Any insite or assistance you can give me would be appreciated

If the systems are absolutely identical in every way, I see no reason why this would be a problem. Sorry, not familliar with the promis controllers though. I assume you're going RAID for reliability and not performance. IF you were looking for performance I'd advise against using a promise controller as the RAID is software based.
