Ok , here I am again.
went out and got a seriel external modem.
Set it up in windows first try about 2 minutes.
figured next I would try knoppix live cd.
pointed knoppix towards modem and set up account info.

hit connect
here is log in script debug:

ATZ
OK
ATMIl3
ok
ATDT 570-4574
CONNECT@56,700
UQKTZ

Can hear dialtone and handshake.

within 30-45 seconds up pop a box that says:
Timed out waiting for kppp interface to come up

tried adjusting to longer timeout no difference.

asked to see ppp log to see what it recorded it says:
Cannot open any of the following log files
/var/log/syslog.ppp
/var/log/sylog
/var/log/messages

kpp diagnosis: no help

so whats the problem here?

also tried in fedora initially it dialed in would give me an error 8?
then it quit dialing and gave me an error 2.

The only thing i didnt try that I could think of was entering manual dns numbers which MSN says is not necessary and won't give out. In fact Muhahmmed at MSN told me we don't support Linux said thank you and hung up.:brokenheart:

what are the file permissions on /var/log/syslog.ppp, var/log/sylog, and /var/log/messages?

you can find out doing "ls -l" in /var/log

opening terminal and typing in
Ls -L
it says:
drwxr-xr-x 3 knoppix knoppix 220 may 12 19:15 Desktop
drwxr-xr-x 2 knoppix knoppix 40 apr 19 2004 tmp

does that mean anything to you hyperblaze?

for MSN dialup, you must put in your username like MSN\USERNAME (like in a windows domain)

they may have changed since you used it I don't know? I have been using them for about 9 months and in windows at the logon screen you use *****@msn.com plus your password hit connect and your off and running. whenever I hit the butterfly icon all that info is right in front of me on login screen.

half tempted to get a temporary netzero free account just so I can make sure its not msn, the default of course is to launch thier own browser that is installed when you setup with thier software. this can be changed after the fact by changing your default browser of course but everything is geared that way.

I am talking about using the windows dialer, and avoiding the MSN software (it's ass).

So in a normal dial up non proprietary software crap screen, you would put the username in as I said. I don't think MSN has ported their software to linux yet...

that is true in windows if I go around thier software and make my own connection then I have to enter it msn/username.

Just tried that on knoppix live cd and results were same as before.
it dials, handshake, connects, says logging onto network then up pops box that say timed out waiting for kppp interface to come up same as on my original post.

that was an excellent idea though....So far I think I like knoppix better the fedora.

I have had problems with knoppix, because it was a live CD, and you couldn't do some things with writing to a file. That was a few revs back (about 3 years ago) so things may have changed. Are you booting from a liveCD?

yes live cd
knoppix 3.6

edit: have changed to the kde desktop in fedora so I can use the kppp dialer and so I have certain ability to write to drive. using either username approach It again connects say logging on to network..then timesout on kppp interface.
This time when you go to log says only Terminating on signal 15 and offers no other suggestions.

Well I am using fedora at the moment. And am logged on to the net.
after installing kde desktop and trying to use kppp which I liked the interface of I was still getting errors. so went back to using network configuration from gnome and tried adding domain to front of username like you suggest weaver and that did it. now will have to find out how to enable firewall since on install I said no....thks for your suggestions:)
