I think it's good if you want to run both operating systems on the same machine and bad if you don't. They've got a whole seperate forum for this sort of thing.

if you actually have a use for linux then it's good. if linux is just going to sit in a partition taking up space...why do you need it?

I think it may be a good idea if you are actually going to use both OS's but as tfinch2 said if your not gonna use it then there is no sense. IF you jsut want to try linux out just try a live CD liek Mandrake Move or Knoppix

Bad idea. Wasting space on a Windows partition is just that, a waste.

...well, its depends. What're you doing it for?

If you're going to do it to learn, I would higly suggest putting it on its own system and HDD (hot swappable maybe?). You're going to be breaking stuff left and right. Lots of reinstalling! Its the best way to learn, but you dont want to have to worry about messing up the MBR on the HDD (I speak from experience) and not being able to boot into windows. So, in short, if you're going to do Linux for fun/learning, seperate HDD that you can throw in, or a seperate system all together.

if the idea of dual-booting appeals to you, then you'll love the idea of virtual-machines

check out vmware, or microsofts version called virtual-pc

why choose one OS at boot-up time, when you can have all/as-many-as-you-want any time you feel like it?

keep in mind that vmware requires a bit of memory as you are running more then 1 OS. I would suggest at least 1GB if not more for that
